To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHIRLEY Q. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment Pressers and Creasers; and I dohereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawing, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates generally to improvements in garment pressers and creasers; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of partsand details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and describedand then pointed out in the claims. 1
This invention has for its object the production'of an efficient, serviceable, convenient, and comparatively inexpensive device for pressing and. creasing trousers. It is so constructed that it' can be divided to enable it being packed in a trunk or suit-case. To attain this object, I construct this device as shown in the-drawings forming a part of thiszspecification, and in which,-
Figure 1 isa plan of the device in its assembled condition. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thesame; and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a portion of the clamping members, showing de tails of construction of the clamping bolts.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, this device comprises two. separate parts, viz., a front clamping member A, and a back clamping member B. These elements are precisely alike, and for this reason I shall describe in detail the front clamp only, referring to the clamp B when necessary.
The front clamp A comprises two mems bers12, 13, which may be cheaply produced in wood of suitable width and thickness. The top member 12, is, preferably, shorter than the bottom member 13, and it has at its ends short sections 14, 15, which, added to the length of the. top member 12, makes the latter member of substantially the same length as the bottom member 13, which length is less than the length of a pair of trousers, for the reason that the creases in the trousers only extend from the bottom of the legs to the crotch. The two members 12,
13, are each made in two parts, the joint 16,
of the lower part 13, being at one side of the joint 17 of the upper part 12, so that adjacent ends of these parts overlap, which is thus made to support the parts and prevent them from being disarranged when in use.
The upper and lower members 12, 13, are hingedly connected in slightly spaced-apart condition, by a series of hinges 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22, the hinges 20 being approximately medially of the joint 16" in the lower memher and the joint 17 in the upper member.
The short sections 14, 15, of the upper member'12, are each hingedly connected to the lower member 13, by two pairs of hinges each, viz., 23, 23 and 24, 2%, respectively; and these end sections 14, 15, and the corresponding ends of the lower member 13 are slotted from their outer edges inwardly for some distance, as at 25; and in these slots there are located clamping bolts 26, provided with thumb-nuts 27, for convenience in turning these nuts.
These clamping bolts, as well as others hereinafter mentioned, are all alike, and consist each of a screw-threaded, round, rod as best shown in Fig. 4c. This rod is bent at rlght angles near its lower end, as at 28, and this bent portion is mortised or sunk into a groove 29, formed in the lower surface of the member 13, whereby this clamping bolt may rotate on its right-angled portion 28, it being held in proper position by one or more staples 30, or other suitable means. By swinging this clamping bolt out of the slot, as indicated in Fig. 3, the end sections 14, 15, and the top member 12, may be turned on their hinges to open the clamps. Members 12, 13, have a series of slots and clamping bolts therein the same as the end sections 14:, 15, and for the same purpose.
As hereinbefore stated, the-back clamp is i a duplicate of the front clamp; and these two clamps are adjustably connected by a pair of bars 31, 3 2, preferably made of strips of flat metal. The bar 31 is pivoted at one end near one end of the clamp B, by a pivot screw 33, while bar 32 is similarly connected tothe member 12 of the clamp A, by a pivot bolt 34. Each of these two bars has near its opposite end a series of holes; and these holes are planned to engage pins 36, on the clamps, whereby these two clamps can be adjustedwith reference to each other, by lifting the bars 31, 32, from these pins and moving the clamps to the desired position and again causing the bars to engage the pins in the proper holes. These bars 31, 32, may be swung on their pivots so as to lie on the top surfaces of the clamps A, B, for the purpose of enabling the garment being placed into the clamps and for reducing the size of, or space required for, the clamps when being packed up. And to prevent these bars from being moved in the wrong direction, and to allow of no shifting movement of the clamps in opposing direction after having been applied, there are stoppins 87, on the clamps which limit the movement of the bars 31, 32, to one direction.
In order to collapse or knock-down the device so that it will occupy the smallest space to which it can be reduced, the hinges 20 have, preferably, removable pintles 38, which pintles, when withdrawn, permit the two leaves of said hinge to separate, so that each clamp may be separated into two parts. It may here be stated that this hinge 20 may be dispensed with and the joints in the members 12, 13, omitted when separation of the clamps is not desired, without departing from the scope of my invention.
To use these clamps to press and crease a pair of trousers, the garment is first slightly moistened along the lines which are to be creased, and then the garment is carefully folded in the proper manner. The clamp A is then opened and the front edges of the trousers placed uponthe lower member 13. In this condition, the bottom of the trousers will be at the lower end of the clamp, and then the end section 15 is turned down and the clamping screw 26 connected therewith, applied. This end section will now securely hold the lower part of the garment in position. By now pulling on the upper or bodypart of the trousers to stretch the legs tightly and to take out the bagging at the knees, and'then folding down the end section 14, and applying the clamping screw connected therewith, the fronts of the trouser-legs are in proper condition to be pressed to form the creases therein, byturning the member 12 down upon the garment and applying the clamping screws 26. The back clamp B is applied to the garment in precisely the same manner as the front clamp, and then the two clamps are pulled apart away from each other to stretch the garment tightly, and then the locking bars 31, 32, are applied to retain the garment in tautened condition, in which it may be kept for a short time and then the clamps removed, when the garment will be in as perfectly smooth and creased condition as any tailor or presser can perform this work.
I'have shown in these clamps aside from the two clamping bolts in the end sections four clamping bolts in the members 12, 13; but it is obvious that this number may be somewhat decreased without materially affecting the operativeness of the clamps. I have also stated that the hinge 20 has a re movable pintle whereby by withdrawing the pintle, the clamp can be divided into two parts; but a like result may be obtained by removing the screws from one of the leaves of the hinge 20. This operation will, probably, not be as readily accomplished as that of withdrawing the pintle, but it has the advantage that commercial hinges can be used, while a hinge having a removable pintle is a special article of manufacture, not readily obtainable in the open market.
I have hereinbefore described the preferred embodiment of my invention, but I desire it to be understood that details of construction may be varied, and parts omitted without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described this invention, I claimas new, and desire to secure to myself by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A garment pressing and creasing de vice, comprising a pair of alike clamps, each clamp consisting of an upper, and'a lower member, said members being hingedly connected along one of their longitudinal margins, said upper member being shorter than the lower member, a separate short section at each end of the upper member, said separate sections being hinged to the lower member at the ends of the latter member, there being in each end section and in the upper and lower members slots reaching'from the outer margininwardl-y, apivoted clamping bolt in each of these slots, and bars,'one of said bars being pivoted toone ofthe clamps and reaching over to the other clamp, the
other bar being pivoted to the latter clamp and .reaching over to the first-mentioned clamp, means for holding said bars in adjusted position, and means for limiting the rotative movement of said bars to one direction only. a V

In a garment pressing and creasing de vice, a clamp, said clamp comprising an upper, and a lower, member, said members I being hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal margins, said upper member being shorter than the lower member, each member being formed of two parts, the joint of the lower member being offset from that of the upper member, a hinge connecting the two parts of the clamp medially between the joints of the upper and lower members, said hinge having a removable pintle which when pulled permits the upper and lower members to separate.
3. In a trouser presser iand creaser, a clamp, said clamp comprising an upper and a lower member, said members being hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal margins, the upper member being shorter than the lower member, each member being formed of two parts, the joint of the lower member being offset from that of the upper member, a hinge approximately medially of the two joints, said hinge having a removable pintle, a series of slots in the upper and lower members, clamping bolts in said slots, said clamping bolts being rotatably secured to the lower member of said clamp, a short end section at each end of the upper member, slots in these end sections, and clamping bolts in these slots, said end sections having each two hinges to connect them to the lower member of said clamp.
4. In a trouser creaser and presser, a clamp, said clamp comprising an upper and a lower member, said members being hingedly connected along one of their margins, each member being formed of two parts, the joints of the lower part being offset from that of the upper member, a hinge approximately medially of the joints of said members, slots in one of the marginal edges of said members, and clamping bolts in said slots, said clamping bolts being rotatably secured to the lower member of said clamp.
5. In a trouser presser and creaser, a

In a trouser presser and creaser, a clamp, said clamp comprising two members, said members being hingedly connected at one of their longitudinal edges, slots reaching from these edges inwardly, a clamping bolt in each of said slots, said clamping bolt having a right-angled bend, said bent portion being embedded in the lower surface of one of said members, and means for retaining said bent portion in position.
