WILLIAM T. LUGKEY, OF THOMSON, GEORGIA.
TROUSERS-PRESSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1914.
Application filed May 3, 1913. Serial No. 765,391.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM T. LUCKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomson, in the county of McDufiie and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Pressers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to trousers pressers, and has for its primary object to provide apresser of this character in which the trousers may be held therein so as to, sustain the fabric smooth and to produce creases throughout the crease lines of the leg portions thereof, the seams and the waistband of the said trousers being accommodated in a novel manner to avoid the bulging of the clamping sections when pressing the trousers, thereby assuring the perfect working of the presser.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a trousers presser in which the presser boards are constructed of novel form and the clamping sections are detachably fastened at three of their marginal edges so that the said sections can be locked in close clamping relation to each other whereby the trousers arranged therebetween will be neatly pressed and creased.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a presser of this character wherein trousers will be clamped either when folded or when laid out the full length thereof so that the same can be smoothly creased without necessitating the ironing of the same in the usual well-known manner.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a presser of this character which is simple in construction, readily and easily operated, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trousers presser constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the trousers arranged therein and the sections of the presser partly open. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the clamping sections in open position with one of the presser boards in position and one leg of the trousers folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view with the presser closed and clamplng the trousers. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the presser boards, the same being partly broken away at one side thereof. Fig. 6 is a plan View of another of the presser boards, the same being partly broken'away at one side thereof. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of trousers presser, the same being partly open. Fig. 8 is a planview of the presser board used therein. Fig. 9 is a plan view of a modified form of presser board shown in Fig. 6.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the trousers presser comprises a pair of similarly shaped board-like sections 10 and 11, respectively, the same being swingingly connected at adjacent edges by means of hinges 12 so that the sections may be opened and closed with respect to each other. Adapted to be laid longitudinally upon the inner faces of the said sections when opened is a pair of trousers A to be pressed and creased, the sections when opened being disposed in the same plane with each other to allow the trousers to be superimposed thereon in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, with the exception that the folded leg portion is straight with the other leg portion. Attached in any suit-able manner to the section 10 near the outer free edge thereof and disposed at the inner face is a clamping device 12 which is designed to engage the waist-band 13 of the trousers A and also the cuffs of'the lower ends 14 of the leg portions 15 of the trousers in a manner hereinafter more fully described. It will be apparent that when the waist-band 18 of the trousers A is engaged by the clamping device 12 the said trousers will be fastened at the waist line thereof to the section 10, whereby the leg portions of the trousers can be smoothed prior to the closing of the sections of the presser.
Adapted to be removably inserted between the leg portions 15 of the trousers resting upon the section 10- is a smoothing board comprising outer flexible plies 16v and an intermediate filling sheet or ply 17 the said outer ply being preferably made from cardboard, veneering or fiber sheets, while the intermediate ply is preferably made from felt or other suitable compressible filling, the said plies being united in any suitable manner. The smoothing board is of a shape cor responding to the shape of the section 10, but is cut into at one edge to form an inwardly tapering notch 18 to accommodate the crotch of the trousers A so that the inner portions of the legs 15 will lie smooth and the said smoothing board will sustain the same in such condition while the trousers are being pressed. The smoothing board at one end edge has the intermediate filling 17 re moved as at 19 whereby the outer plies 16 will come together into contacting relation when the sections are closed, and this edge of the said smoothing board is disposed contiguous to the hinged joint between the sections so as to avoid the wrinkling, thereby only making a single line mark across the leg portion 15 of the trousers when folded in the presser in a manner presently de scribed.
Removably superimposed upon the trousers A and extending throughout a portion thereof resting upon the section 10 is a second smoothing board 20, the same being constructed correspondingly to the smoothing board hereinbefore described with the exception of the recess therein. WVhen the smoothing board 20 has been positioned upon the trousers A the uppermost leg portion 15 is folded on to the said board as shown in Fig. 2 in the drawing and is smoothed with the hand so as to remove any roughness or creases therein prior to the engaging of the clamping devices 12 with the cuff or end of the said leg portion so as to hold the same taut and smooth to prevent bulging or puckering thereof.
Superimposed upon the folded leg portion 15 of the trousers is a third removable creasing board 21 which is of identical c0nstruction and shape with respect to the smoothing board 20 hereinbefore mentioned, and thereafter the other leg portion 15 is folded over on to the said smoothing board 21, after which the said leg portion is smoothed with the hand so that on swinging the section 11 upwardly and inwardly on to the said section 10 the trousers will be clamped therebetween for the pressing and creasing of the same, the leg portion when folded being engaged at the cuff or free end thereof with the clamping device 12 for sustaining it taut and smooth during the pressing of the trousers. The smoothing boards each have the filling sheet cut away at 22 at a point longitudinally thereof in alinement with the side seams of the trousers A so as to form a seat for the said seam to obviate the bulging of ing of the outer plies 16 together to accommodate the waist-band 18 of the trousers when the same are folded between the sections 10 and 11 of the presser for the pressing of the said trousers, and in this manner the bulging of the trousers or the undue separation of the smoothing boards is avoided.
The section 10 has suitably pivoted thereto at the longitudinal side and the outer edges a plurality of catches or latches 24 which are provided with notches 25 on opposite sides for engagement with spaced lips 26 of keeper plates 27 fixed to the outer face of the section 11, the lips being projected beyond the side and outer end edges thereof so that the latches or catches will automatically engage with the lips of the keeper plates for the locking of the sections in close clamping relation to each other for the pressing of the trousers A therebetween.
The sections 10 and 11 of the presser and the smoothing boards are of a size and shape to fit within a dress suit case whereby the said presser can be conveniently carried therein. It is of course to be understood that the size and shape of the presser can be varied, and also the material from which the sections and smoothing boards are made can be changed or altered as the occasion de mands.
In Figs. 7 and 8 there is shown a modified form of presser, which comprises the sections 28 and 29, the same being connected together by means of hinges 30, the sections 28 and 29 being of a length and width to permit the trousers to be laid on either of said sections the full length thereof without necessitating the folding of the leg portions of the trousers for the creasing of the same as hereinbefore set forth. Removably inserted between the leg portions of the trousers is a smoothing board 31, the construction of which is identical to the smoothing boards hereinbefore described and is formed with a cut away portion forming a notch 32 for accommodating the crotch of the trousers as will be clearly apparent.
In Fig. 9 there is shown a modification of smoothing board which comprises the outer plies 33 and an intermediate filling 34, the filling and outer plies being cut away at one longitudinal edge of the board as at 35 so that the seat portion of the trousers can be folded into the cut away portion 35, this board being only used for large sizes of trousers which through the body thereof are of greater extent than the width of the sections of the presser. Also this construction of board prevents the bulging of the trousers at the seat when laid between the sections of the presser for the creasing of the said trousers.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. In a trouser presser, a pair of sections, hinges connecting the sections together at one end thereof, keeper plates fixed to one section and projected beyond the edges thereof at the side and the other end, spaced lips formed on the keeper plates, latches pivotally connected to the other section in alinement with the keeper plates and having opposite notched sides for automatic en gagement by the lips on the keeper plate on the bringing together of the sections whereby the same will be locked in relative adjusted position with respect to each other, and removable smoothing boards arranged between the sections, each board having a compressible intermediate filling, the said filling being entirely removed at predetermined points of the boards.
2. In a trouser presser, a pair of sections, hinges connecting the sections together at one end thereof, keeper plates fixed to one section and projected beyond the edges thereof at the side and the other end, spaced lips formed on the keeper plates, latches pivotally connected to the other sect-ion in alinement With the keeper plates and having opposite notched sides for automatic engagement by the lips on the keeper plate on the bringing together of the sections whereby the same will be locked in relative adjusted position with respect to each other, removable smoothing boards arranged between the sections, each board having a compressible intermediate filling, the said filling being entirely removed at predetermined points of the boards, and resilient cords mounted on the inner face of one section and having catches for engagement with the article to be pressed for holding the same taut relative to the smoothing board.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
