STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.22,1921.

abhor-wags UNITED STATES PATENT E'I'IIAN I. DODDS, OF CENTRAL VALLEY, NEW YORK, A$SIGNOR T FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OlTv PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYZBOLT STRUCTURE.
Application filed January 22, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN 1. Dono s, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Central Valley, in the county ofwOr-ange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dc scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in staybolt structure, the object being to provide simple and efficient means for detachably securing the sleeve or bolt bearing mem her to the outer sheet of the boiler, and it consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Flgure 1 is a view in longitudinal section on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 2 is a view in trans verse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
5 represents the outer sheet of a boiler provided with a conical opening the wall of which is preferably concave as shown at 6* and wider at the top thus forming a seat for the sleeve or bolt bearing member 7. This sleeve or member? is shaped to conform in size and shape to the opening in the boiler sheet, and projects above the same as shown, and is threaded externally at its outer end to be engaged by the cap 8, the free edge of which bears on the gasket 9 on the outer surface of the boiler sheet 5 to form a steam tight joint, hence by screwing on the cap 8 when the latter is in engagement with the gasket or outer sheet, the tendency will be to pull the bearing member 7 outwardly.
The inneredge of the wall of the opening through the boiler sheet is cut away, as at 11 at diametrically opposite points to receive the inwardly projecting fingers 12 formed integral with the bearing member,
' the said fingers being provided with outwardly projecting hook-shaped ends 13 which are adapted to overhang the inner surface of the sheet 5 and lock the bearing member 7 against outward displacement.
The inner end of the bearing member 7 is open for the passage of the bolt 14, the head 15 of which rests on the curved seat 16 of the bearing member 7 and is supported thereby.
With this construction it will be seen that Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lliec. ti, 1912 1 Serial Ito. 439,152.
by placing the bearing member over the in ner end of the bolt and passing the bolt through the opening in the boiler sheet 5, the bearing member may be entered in the bolt opening and turned if necessary until the fingers 12 thereof are in line with and pass through the cut away recesses 11 in the sheet, and then by giving the bearing memher a part turn, the hook shaped ends 13 will be moved so as to overhang the inner surface of the sheet 5. The bolt may then be screwed or riveted to the inner sheet (not shown) in the usual and well known manner, after which the cap 8- should be screwed to the upper end of the bearing member, until it engages the gasket 9 and is forced thereagainst sufliciently tight to prevent leakage of steam. With this construction the cap maybe removed at any time for inspecting the bolt, and the bearing member may be removed by first removing the bolt.
The cap 8 is in a position to engage the bolt head and take care of any stresses due to a collapsing action of the inner and outer sheets of the boiler, and the bearing member, after it has been adjusted, is held solidly in place and against the possibility of displacement, by the hooks l3 engaging the inner surface of the sheet 5 and the cap engaging the outer surface of the said sheet. The cap is always readily removable to permit the bolt to be inspected, and the tighter the cap is screwed down, the stronger the clamping action of the parts which hold the bearing member in place.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet having a concave opening the inner end of the wall of said opening being cut away at a plurality of points, a bearing member mounted in said opening and provided with hook shaped fingers adapted to be passed through said cut away portions and the bearing locked against outward displacement by turning the bearing to carry the hooked ends of the fingers under the sheet, a bolt the head of which is mounted in said bearing member, and a threaded member engaging external threads on the upper end of the bearing member and hearing against the outer surface of said boiler sheet.
2. In a stay bolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet having a concave opening, the inner end of the wall of said opening being cut away at a plurality of points, a bearing member seated in said opening and provided with hook shaped fingers adapted to pass through the cut away portion of the 'wall of the opening and adapted to be locked by turning the bearing member so as to carry the hooked ends under the inner surface of the sheet, and a cap having internal threads adapted to engage external threads on the bearing member, the free edge of the cap adapted to bear against the outer surface of the sheet, substantially as and ETHAN l. DODDS \Vitness EDWIN SPENCER RYCE.
