The object of my present invention is the provision oi? a higldyv eiiicient tension device designed more especially. though not neces- "ily, for use in cotton yarn spooiers or winders.
A peculiar and desirable characteristic oi? the device resides in the tact that by virtue of' the construction ot the device an operator can tie the ends ot yarn sections above thc device and release the yarn whereupon the yarn will be guided to proper working` position in the device.
To the attainment oi the foregoing. the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and deiinitely claimed.

Among other elements my novel device comprises a body plate i which is preferably of metal. rlhe said body plate l is provided at its right hand rear corner with a clamp 2 through the medium of which it is affixed on the usual transverse rod (not shown) of a spooler or winder. The said transverse portion 16 is mergedj in turn, .into a comparatively wide arm 17. rfhis arm 17 is disposed in Viront of the standard i0, is slotted at 18 to receive a screw 19 by which it is adjustably connected to the standard, and terminates at its end in a flange 20 that abuts against the lett hand edge oit the standard l0. Maniiestly the combination guard and guide is capable oi being adjusted so as to position the lower edge oit' its arm 17 a greater or less distance above the sharp edge 8 of the lip 7 to suit yarn of different sizes.
The rotary `friction member is numbered It is mounted on the post 11 so as to be freely revoluble about the same, and is provided in its underside with kerfs 22 which are designed incident to the turning ot the friction member to clear lint or litter trom beneath itself.
In Fig. 1 I show by dotted lines the course or" yarn through my novel tension device which is located between the usual spindle and spool of a spooier or Winder. In this connection it will be not-iced that the yarn is adequately tensioned, and it will also be noticed that by virtue oi the yarn being carried over the sharp edge 8 of the lip 7 and under the edge of the guard arm 17, any knots or enlargements in the yarn Will be either reduced, or the yarn vvili be cut or broken at such point whereupon it will be the province o1 an attendant to tie the ends oi" the yarn sect-ions together. At this point l would direct attention to the fact that by reason of the construction of my tension device it is casibie for the attendant to tie the ends of the yarn sections at a point above the tension device and then release the yarn, when due to the action or' the combination guard and guide the yarn will correctly iind its way through the tension device.
fi`he combination guard and guide is so designated inasmuch as it is adapted to prevent a 'falling spool from interfering With the friction member or the yarn en route through the device.
My novei tension device has been success- Yfully used in actual practice, and has demonstrated a high degree of utility in connection With the operation oit a spooler or Winder.
Having described'my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is i l. rl`he combination in a tension device, of a body having a mouth and an eye connected by a slot with the mouth, a friction member on the body and above said slot and eye, and a guide arranged to guide yarn to the eye and under the ifriction member and having a portion opposed to and spaced from a portion of the body to stop knots.
2. In a tension device the combination of body having an inwardly tapered mouth and an eye connected through a slot with the inner end of said mouth and also having on its rear portion a lip with a sharp edge, a guard and guide having an upright portion connected to the body and also having a forward inclined portion, a transverse portion and a rear arm connected With the body, and a rotary friction member mounted on the body and disposed above the slot and eye.
