AUTOMATIC ADVERTISING-MACHINE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee 6, 1921.
Application filed February 20, 1918. Serial No. 218,251.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENDRICK W. LUND- QUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of (/alifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Advertising-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for automatically controlling, operating and lighting advertising cards, and for reproducing the same on a screen consisting of a translucent glass plate which is a portion of the machine, and:
The objects of my invention are: First, to provide automatic means for changing the cards in their proper sequence, thus providing an automatically operated advertising machine: second, to provide a machine of this class in which the cards may be shown either on one side of the machine or on opposite sides as desired: third, to provide a machineof this class in which a plurality of different cards may be shown in proper sequence as desired: fourth, to provide a machine of this class in which the advertising may be shown in the day time as well as at ni ht, without darkenin the surroundings: fi th, to provide a machine of this class the operation and maintenance of which are very inexpensive, and sixth, to provide a machine of this class which is simple, economical of construction, durable, readily installed in places where it is desired to use the machine and will not readily deteriorate or et out of order.
W Fith these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularl set forth in the appended claims, reference being hadto the accolnpanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a partof this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the casing in the referred form and showing the inner wor ing parts in elevation to facilitate the illustration. Fig, 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view through 3-3 of Fig. 1 and showing the operating parts in elevation to facilitate the illustration. ig. is $1;
enlarged assembly view of some of the operating parts. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through 5-5 of Fig. 1, showing some of said working parts. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan v 1ew showing the modified form of construction for reproducing the card on the translucent plates, and Fig. 7 is a fragmentargr sectional view through 7-7 of Fig. 6. milar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings. The card holders 1, 2, 3 and 1; supporting bracket 5; spiders 6; illuminating chamber 7; gear 8; brake member 9; support 10; gear 11; circuit breaker 12; worm pinion 13; motor 14.; casing 15; hood 16; lens 17; lamps 18; support l9 and translucent plate 20, constitute the principal parts of my automatic advertising machine.
The casing 15 may be made any shape or form desired and mountedon the bottom thereof in one side is the bracket 5 in which is j ournaled' the one end of the shaft 6 and the other end of said shaft is journaled in the partition 15 of said casing. Mounted on this shaft o at each end arethe spiders 6 and pivotally mounted on the outwardly extending ends of the spiderarms are the card Supports 1, 2, 8 and 4 which are flat mem bers adapted for the advertising cards to rest on and said cards are secured to the opposite sides of said supports. Secured on said shaft 6 on the opposite side of the partition 15 from the spiders 6, is a gear 8 which is provided with laterally extending lugs 8 and mounted so as to engage with the teeth of said gear 8 is the brake member 9 which is a bifurcated member actuated by means of a projecting lug 12 on the circuit breaker 12. This circuit breaker 12 is secured on the one side of the gear 11 and consists of a band an insulated lug'12 which serves as a circuit breaker and brake release. The gear 11 is a worm gear and it is operated by means of the worm pinion 13, which is operated by means of the motor 1 1 throughbelt 14: and sheaves 14 and 14. Two of the lugs 8 on the gear wheel'8 are adapted to engage with a latch 11 on the gear 11 with each revolution of said gear 11 as shown by solid and dotted lines in Fig. 5. Mounted on this shaft 6 is also a sprocket wheel 6 upon which is mounted a chain 6 shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing, which extends to a similar sprocket and shaft which is adapted to operate in unison with the shaft 6 for showing the cards on opposite sides of the machine. Mounted on the casing is a trip member 15 which extends inwardly and engagesthe card holders 1, 2, .3 and 4 as they are re volved by the spider 6 and turnnthem onehalf revolution. This trip also serves as a stop for preventing them turning more than one-half revolution so that the cards on each side are shown by turning the holders with each revolution of the spider;
a It will be herenoted that the lug 12 on the circuit breaker 12 is. insulated for the purpose of opening and closing the circuit to the lamps 7 in the light chamber '7 so that the li lits 7 are not on-during the revolution of t e spider 6 and the movement of the holders 1, 2, .3 and 4. g
In the modified form of construction shown-in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings insteadof the light chamber 7 there is provided a differently .sha ed lightchamber, shaped as shownbest in igs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, forming a reflector and provided with an opening in one side and the card holders 1, 2, 3 and 4 are stopped in front of this opening. It is provided with a plurality of lamps 18 therein so positioned as to throw the light backward centrally, onthe card in the holder for illuminating thecard and in said light chamber in alinement was the center of the cardholder is ailens 17 and in front of tlie lens 17 is a translucent plate 20; these lights 18 are lighted in the. same manner as the lights 7* in the chamber 7,
causing an illumination of the card thus throwing the picture upon the translucent late 20 while the card holder is in position ut the lights go out with the movement of said card holders.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and certain modifications thereof I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and ar-' rangement nor to the modification thereof but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the ap ended claims.
t is obvious that with this construction there is provided an automatic advertising machine in which the negatives or cardsare automatically moved into position and illuminated, that the motor 14 revolving the worm pinion 13 will cause the gear 11 to revolve which in turn will revolve the gear 8 a partial revolution, thus turning the spider and properly positioning the card holders. r
It will be here noted that there is provided a cirriuit breaker 1:2 for cutting oil the current to the lamp 7 during the movement of gear 8 and the spider 6 which causes an intermittent lighting of the light chamber there being no light during the movement of the card holders, that an enlarged reproduction of'the race-or the card placed into the card holder will be thrown, upon the screen 20 by reason of the radiation of the light from the lamp 7 thrown upon the face of "said card, thenthrough the lens 17 and onto. the screen 20' which is a translucent screen which provides for the reproduction of the cards upon the'screen in day light as well as in darkened surroundings, that the device as a whole is simple, economical of construction and automatic in its operation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is: g
1. In an automatic advertising machine,
the combination of spaced apart spider mem- V bers, card holders pivotally mounted between each two pairs of arms on said spider members, eachicard holder provided with oppositely disposed card supports, gear, ratchet escapenient and brake. means for intermitanuy revolving saids'pider a portion or 'a holders in the revolution of said spiders for revolving said card holders a one-half revolution, means for intermittently illuminating one cardholder with the movement of said spider, means-remaking said spider for a certain pie-determined time and means for projecting the matteron said and on is a translucent plate during the time said card remains standing. p
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Diego, Californiafihis seventh da of Februar 1918.. lIENDRICI W. LUNDQUIST.
