Description
F ESTERHAY RATCHET WRENCH.
APPLICATION men car. 14. 1916.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
w .M m m UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
FRANK ESTERHAY, 0F SOMERVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
RATCHET-WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK ESTERHAY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Somerville, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ratchet wrenches and particularly of the type adapted to be applied to bolt heads, nuts and the like for turning the same.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device, light of construction and durable in its character, having interchangeable bushings suited to a Wide variety of sizes and shapes of bolt heads and their corresponding nuts.
These and other objectsare attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention, parts being broken away to disclose the interior.
Fig. 2 is another side elevation, taken in a different plane from Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the interchangeable bushings employed in connection with the implement.
The wrench consists of a shank or handle 10 of indefinite length, its operative end 11 being formed rectangularly, its extreme end on opposite sides beginning at the arcuate edges as 12 being reduced and finally terminating in an arcuate seat, to receive a ratchet wheel 14, the same having formed upon its periphery two sets of teeth 15 spaced from each other and overlying the reduced portion on opposite sides thereof. The ratchet wheel 14 is also provided with a central rectangular opening 16 therethrough.
Between the two sets of teeth. the ratchet wheel is grooved circumferentially along its median line to receive a band 18, secured by screws 19, to the rectangular portion of the shank 11. and engaged by the screw 20 with a similar band 21 encircling the opposite side the band being looped outwardly at 22 and secured at 23 by means of similar screws 19, to the shank as clearly indicated the drawings.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
I Application filed October 14, 1916. Serial No. 125,627.
This segmental band holds the ratchet wheel in its relative position in engagement with the handle, allowing it to turn freely therein, but preventing lateral action or dis placement in any direction.
A pawl 25 is pivoted on the pin 26 to the shank 11, the pawl being operable with in the recess formed by the loop 22, its point 'being maintained normally in engagement with the two sets of teeth 15, by means of the coiled helical spring 27, one end of which is looped through an opening formed in the pawl and turned re'ntrantly as at 28, the other end of the spring passing through an opening 30 in the shank and held by a screw 31.
Thus the ratchet wheel may be turned by the action of the pawl, either one or more teeth according to the extent of the angular action applied to the handle.
Within the opening 16, formed through the ratchet wheel, may be secured bushings or sleeves 35, the same having an outer surface neatly fitted to the opening and held by means of the key 36, entering a slot formed in the wheel.
Obviously, a variety of difl'erent internal sized bushings may be used, either square as indicated in Fig. 1, or hexagonal as indicated in Fig. 4 by the numeral 38. The shape of the bushing is apparent in the perspective view.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a ratchet Wrench having interchangeable bushings is disclosed and that the same is capable of moving bolt head or nut in either direction by merely reversing the implement from one side to another, the position indicated in Fig. 1, showing the position used in tightening a right-hand thread.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A tool including a rectangular head provided with a reduced arcuate end, a ratchet wheel having a median circumferential groove rotatably fitted in said arcuate end with the teeth of'the ratchet wheel overlying the reduced arcuate portion on opposite sides thereof. connected rigid strap elements secured to the rectangular head and partially encircling said median groove to rotatably hold said ratchet wheel in said arcuate end against displacement, one' of said strap elements being looped outwardly adialooped strap element, a pawl adapted to: en
gage said ratchet wheel pivoted below said opening to operate behind said outwardly looped strap and a helical pull spring se- I FRANK ESTERHAY.
