Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 18,1913. Serial No. 795,876.
companying drawings, .in which Figure 1 represents a broken vertical sectional view of a table-bed constructed in accordance with my invention, the structure being shown in open condition; Fig.2, a broken plan section taken as indicated at line :2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken vertical section showing the structure in folded form; Fig. 4, a broken elevational view, partly in section, showing the manner in which the swinging front piece of the frame is held in closed position; and Fig. 5, a broken sectional View of the folding-bed employed. r V In the construction illustrated, A repr sents a-table equipped with a top A which is adapted to be swung to the standing posi tion; and B, a folding-bed mounted in the table and normally housed beneath the top A The frame A comprises end-standards 1 which are fixedly connected at their rear upper portions by a rear side-piece 2, and are connected at their front portions by a swinging front-piece 3. A longitudinal piece 4 connects the lower portions of the end-standards rigidly.
The front-piece 3 has its lower edge-portion equipped at its ends with arms, or hinge-members, 3 which are connected, by pivots 3 with the front legs of the table.
The end edges of the swinging-piece 3 are provided with sockets 5 adapted to be engaged by spring-projected catches 6 with which the front legs of the table are equipped at their upper portions.
The table-top A is pivot-ally and slidably connected at 7 to the rear upper portion of the frame A, so that the top may rest upon the frame in the manner shown in Fig. 3, or may be swung to a standing position. and allowed to drop somewhat with relation to the frame, so that the lower edge portion will bear against the rear legs of the table, in
the manner shown in Fig.1. The connections 7 need not be described in detail here in this feature being clearly disclosed and claimed in my application No. 795,875 filed of even date herewith. At its opposite edge portion, the tabletop is equipped with lugs or projections 8 which embrace the upper portion of the front-piece 3 in the closed condition of the structure, as shown in Figs.
3 and 4.
The folding-bed B comprises a head-section 9 which is fixedly secured between the end-standards 1 a short distance below the upper ends thereof; a spacing section 10; a
main intermediate section 11; and a footsection 12, the several sections being fold ably related.
The'spacing section 10 comprises bars which are joined by pivots 13 to the front ends of the bars comprising the section 9; and a downwardly bowed truss-member l-llconnecting the bars of the section 10. The section 11 comprises bars which are joined, by pivots 15, to the adjacent ends of the bars of the section 10. The section 11 is provided with legs 16 which are joined by pivots 17 to the outer portions of the bars of the section 11. The legs 16 have upper extensions which are connected by links 18 to the spacing section '10. The section 12 comprises a Ushaped member whose arms 12 have their extremities equipped with fixedly secured arms, or hinge-members, 19, which are joined by pivots 20 to arms or hinge-members 21 fixedly secured to the bars comprising the section 11. The arms 19 and 21 converge upwardly, and the pivots 20 are disposed above the plane of the bedframe when the structure is in the open condition shown in Fig. 1. In this position, the ends of the arms 12 abut against the adjacent ends of the bars comprising the section 11. The section 12 is equipped near its free or swinging edge with locking pawls 22 adapted to automatically engage locking members 23 with which the bars of the section 11 are fitted, as shown in Fig. 5. The locking pawls 22 lie in a horizontal position in housings 24:, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the structure is in the extended position, the pawls being connected with the arms of the section 12 by pivots 25. The
pawls are provided with foot-portions 26, the notches or recesses of which engage the -hooked catches 23, in the manner shown in Fig. 5. The catches 23 are beveled or inelined at their upper sides, and the notches of the members 22 have beveled shoulders '27 adapted to throw the pawls away from the members 23 when the bed-section 12 is swung downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 5. An automatic release is effected by lowering the section 12 sharply and then quickly elevating it, the momentum of the pawls l2 preventing their reengagement with the locking members 23 until after the hooks 26 have passed the locking members 23. The folding-bed frame has stretched thereon the usual flexible bed-bottom, or fabric, 28. It will be noted that in the folded condition of the structure the sections 9 and 11 are spaced with relation to each other, while the section 1:2 is disposed between the sections 9 and 11 and spaced with relation to the section 11. The arrangement is such that the bed mattress and bed linen may be folded and unfolded with the bed. The bars of the spacing section 10 and of the main sections 9 and 11 are suitably shouldered so that the bars of the section 10 will support the section 11 in the folded condition shown in Fig. 3; and also so that the rigidity of the structure will be maintained when the bed is in the extended position shown in Fig. 1.
The structure may be converted from the table form to the bed form by swinging the table-top to the standing position shown in big. 1, lowering the front piece 3, swinging the section 11 to the open position while the section 12 remains locked thereto, and finally, by a quick action, releasing the sec- The manner of folding the structure is obvious.
As shown in Fig. 2, it is preferred to connect the outer ends .of the bars comprising the section 11 by a truss 29 whose ends are connected with the pivots 17.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom.
\Vhat I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device .of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, and a folding bed housed therein, comprising a head-section, a main intermediate section foldably connected therewith, a foot-section foldably connected with said intermediate section, and locking-members carried by said intermediate section and foot-section and comprising a fixedly secured lockingunember on one of said last named sections and a pivoted locking-member on the other of said sections, said locking-members having surfaces serving to throw the pivoted member away from the fixed member and effect automatic release when the foot-sec tion is moved toward and quickly withdrawn from the intermediate section.
