Description

J. J. PETERS.
LATERAL TAKE-UP FOR DRIVING BOXES. APPLICATION FILED JULY I2. 1920.
1 39'7, 1 1 0. Patehted Nov. 15, 1921.
innren stares PATENT @FFMZn JOHN JOSEPH PETERS, OF OELVVEIN, IOW'A, ASSIGNOR OF 0NE-I-IALF TO NORMAN IB.
AKI'IT, OF OELI/VEIN, IOWA.
'IJATERAL TAKE-UP FOR DRIVING-BOXES.
' Application filed July 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JOSEPH PETERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Oelwein, county, of Fayette, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lateral Take-Ups for Driving-Boxes, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to new anduseful improvements in lateral take-up for driving boxes, and has for its object the provision of a device of this class, which will be simple in structure, economic in manufacture and highly eflicient in use.
j Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference. to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a sectional view of the invention as applied to a driving box mounted on an axle, 1
Fig. 2, is a view similarto Fig. 1, showing the invention in operative position,
Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the device.
. Between the outside face of a driving box and the hub of the wheel which is used on locomotives, freight cars, and the like, there is a certain amount of clearance or space which is knownas the lateral. In operation, the hub of the wheel frictionally engages the face of the driving box and after a time the face of the driving box becomes worn, so that this lateral or clearance has increased. When the lateral clearance be tween the faceof the hub and the face of the driving box is of an inch on eachside, under the present law it is necessary to with draw the car from operation until the driving box is refaced, or until some provision is made for bringing the lateral within the of an inch limit. Various ways have been devised for producing this effect, particularly of which 'is the method of refacing the driving boxes with a brass member. In order to do this, it is necessary that the truck be removed from the car and thedriving box be removed from the axle. It 1s apparent that this is a round-house job and necessitates the removal of the car from service for considerable time.
I have provided a means for taking up Specification of Letters Patent.
1920. Serial No. 395,772.
this lateral and reducing the clearance to -wedge 10 is provided at the opposite side of the frame adapted to engage the opposite side of the driving box for securely mount- Patented Nov. 15, 1921.
ing the same in the frame. As shown in Fig.
3, the wedge 10 is provided with a bevel surface at itsinner side which cooperates with the inclined side wall of the frame, and serves as a wedge tobind the driving box within the frame. A bolt 11 is threaded into the wedge 10 and an adiustment of the wedge is thus brought. about totightly bind the driving box as will be readily understood.
As shown in Fig. 3, the bolt 11 extends downwardly through the binder 12 of the frame. The axle 13 is journaled in the driving box and mounted at each end thereof is a wheel 14c. In constructing my invention,
.I form the members 9 and 10 in such a manner that the channel is wider than the frame with which they are designed for use. Positioned between the channel and the frame so as to make a snug engagement are plates 15 and 16. In Fig. 1, I have shown these plates carried idly in the shoe 9 and the wedge 10 and it will be noticed that they are positioned between the inner side of the frame 8 and the channel of the shoe or wedge Each of the plates is provided with a recess 17 in which engages the legs of a U-shaped member 18, said member 18 being secured to the side of the frame by a suitable bolt or lag screw 19. When the lateral wear has become greater than is allowed by law, the plate 15 or 16 as the case may be, may be removed from its position and placed as shown in Fig. 2, namely, between the outside thereto, a distance equal to the width of the members 15 and 16. In order to force the driving box outwardly, a jack may be engaged between each of them and the operation thereby easily carried out.
, precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a driving box mountable in a frame; wear members insertible between said frame and said driving box; and means engaging between one side of said frame and said .wear members and transposable for engagement between said wear members and the opposite'sideof said frame for shifting said driving box relati-vely'to said frame, substantially as described.
2.'In combination, adriving box'mountable in a frame; wear members insertible between said frame and said driving box;
mmeans engaging between one side of said frame and'saidwear members and transposable for engagement between said wear members and the opposite side of said frame for shifting said driving box relatively to said frame; and means for securing said means in said engaging positions, substantially asdescribed.
3. Incombination, a driving box mountable in-va frame; wear members interpositioned between said box and said frame and embracing the same; and -means engaging between one'side of said frame and said wear members and transposable for engagement between said wear members and the opposite side of said frame for shifting said driving box relatively to said frame, substantially as described.
4. In combination, a driving box mountable in a frame; means for mounting said box in said frame; means for shifting said driving box 'laterally relatively to said frame; and a bar embracing said frame for securing said shifting means in operative position, substantially as described.
5.. In combination, .adriving box mount- .able in aframe; means for mounting said box in said frame; means mountable between said mounting means and said frame for changing the relative position of said box to said frame; and U-shaped members embracing said frame for. securing said last men-' tionedmeans in operative position, substantiallyas described.
6.,In combination a driving box mountable in a frame; channel members for mounting said box in said frame; adjusting .able in a frame; an axle journaled in said box; a wheel mounted on said axle and spaced from said box; adjusting plates adapted to be inserted adjacent the frame and the driving box to shift said boxtoward said wheel to compensate for wear on the outer face of said driving box, substantially as described.
8. In combination a driving box mountable in' a frame; means for mounting-said box in said frame so as to permit lateral movement with respect'thereto; and means engaging said mounting means and said frame for changing the relative position of saidbox to said frame to compensatefor wear on said box, substantially as described.
9. In combination a driving box mountable in a frame; means for mounting said box in said frame so as to permit lateral movement with respect thereto; means engaging said mounting means and said frame for changing the relative position of "said box to said frame to compensate for wear on sald box; and means-for retainmg said engaging means m operative position, substantially as described.
10. In combination a able in a frame; a shaft projected through haid driving box; a wheel mounted on said mounting means and said frame for changing the relative position of said box to said frame to compensate for wear on said box, substantially as described.
11. In combination a driving. box mountable in a frame; ashaft projected through said driving box; a wheel mounted on said shaft and spaced from said driving box; means for mounting said box in said frame so as to permitlateral movement with respect thereto; means engaging said mounting means and said frame for changing the relative position of said box to said frame to compensate for-wear on said box; and means for retaining said engaging means in operative position, substantially as described.
Iii-testimony whereof'Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of driving box mount- 7
