My invention relates to certain improvements in axle boxes for the driving wheels of locomotives, although the box can be de signed for use on other vehicles without departing invention.
The object of the invention is to construct the box so that it can beremoved from the pedestals without having to jack up and remove the' axles and wheels, as well as the boxes. This object Iattain by making one of the flanges ol the box detachable, as fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a front view of an axle box illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, isa sectional view on the line a-a, Fig. 1, show;- ing the detachable flange in position;

Referring to the drawing, 1 is the 'ajz de or the reception of the axle. At one end of the box is a fixed flange 3 formed in the ordinary manner, and at the other end "of the box is a reduced segmental extension 4 having lugs 5; the rear edge of each lug being slightly beveled, as illustrated 1n Fig. 4.
6 is the detachable flange having an open ing for the axle and shaped to fit the segmental portion 4 of the box, this detachable flange has inwardly projecting lugs 7, which normally rest back of the lugs 5 on the portion 4: of the box. The lugs 5 and 7 are so spaced that when the flange 6- is turned in one position the lugs 7 are opposite the spaces between the lugs 5, so that can be placed on the portion 4: of the box. lugs 7 travel back of the lugs 5. The lugs 7 are slightly tapered, as well as the lugs 5, so that when the flange is in the proper po-. sition ',e,.illustrated Figs. 1 and 2, .it is secured and is prevented from lugs.

The bolts are held in'position by keys or other fastenings.
It will be seen that by the use of an axle box oi the construction above described on a locomotive where the driving wheels are on the outside of the frame, when it is de-v sired to remove the box all that is neces sary is to withdraw the bolts, detach the cellar and turn thli detachable flange until the lugs on the flange are opposite the space between the lugs on the box, after which the flange can be detached and, when necessary, the box can be removed from the pedestal, The box can be readily applied by simply reversing the operation. In removing the box 1 preferably slide the box inwardly on the axle and then allow the flange to drop down.
I claim 1. The combination of an axle box having a fixed flange at one end and a detachable flange at the opposite end, the box and the detachable flange having spaced interlocking lugs so that when the detachable flange is turned the lugs will be freeor will inter lock; and means for holding the flange in the locked position.
2. The combination in an axle box: having a fixed flange at one end and a seg' mental extension at the opposite end, said extension having external lugs spaced apart; with a detachable flange arranged to turn on the segmental extension and having internal lugs spaced apart so that, when the flange is turned into position, the lugs of the flange will be back of the lugs on the extension of the box; and means for locking the flange in position.
3. The combination of an axle box having a flange at one end and a segmental extension at the other end; external lugs on the extension; a detachable flange arranged to turn on the extension and having spaced lugs engaging the lugs on the box when the flange is turned into position; With a cellar mounted in the box and locking theflange in position; and means for holding the cellar in the box. 7 v

The combination of an axle box having an opening for the axle and having a fixed flange at one end, said box having an opening at the bottom; a reduced portion; spaced internal lugs thereon; a detachable flange having internal spaced lugs and open at the botto1n,the detachable flange bein arranged to turn on the reduced portion, both sets of lugs being tapered; a cellar adapted to the openings in the box and in the de- 15 tachable flange; perforated lugs on the box, on the flange, and on the cellar; and a'bolt extending through the lugs and holding the several parts in position.
