Description

E. A. HEINTZMAN. 1
SCREWDRIVER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-30, 1920- Patented Nov. 15, 1921.
M My
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. HEINTZMAN, or HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.-
SCREWDRIVER.
Application filed August so, 1920.- serial-No.
a variety of angles, forming an offset screw-' driver capable of being used where ordinary screw-drivers cannot be employed because of inaccessibility to the screw.
A further object is to provide means for holding the blade firmly when extended for use, and finallyto provide a neat appearing tool of simplicity and strength, which can be manufactured at a low cost.
These objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a screw-driver made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the main portion of the handle, the same having a curved outer end 11 adapted to fit the hand of an operator, its opposite, operative end 12 being broadened and curved as shown.
The broadened end of the handle is bifurcated by a central cut 14 to receive the shank of a screw-driver blade 15, which may be straight as usual or offset lnto an angular element 16 as preferred.
. At the inner rounded end of the blade is an opening receptive of the bod of a ivot screw 18 having a head 19 anc arec uced screw portion 20 threaded into the handle on one side of the slot 14.
Another opening 21 is formed in the a shank, the samebeing registerable with any of the holes 22 formed throu h both portions of the handle, in its broac ened portion 12, the holes beingspaeedly arranged in an arc of a circle radiating from the screw 18.
A pin 23 is suited to pass through any of the holes 22 and opening 21, thus rigidly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1 5, 1921 406,848.
holding the blade in any of the several positions into which it may be adjusted.
An eye 24 forms the head of the pinand is secured from loss or being mislaid by a chain or other analogous connection 25, fixed at one end 1n the eye and at the other end to a ring 26 clamped to the side of the handle by the screw head 19.
Thus the blade may be used at an angle of thirty degrees or less, and in connection with the offset feature is very convenient.
1f preferred, another cut 28 is made longitudinally in the handle, in alinement with thecut 14, terminating in a transverse slot 29 111 the upper end of the handle, the slot being receptive of the offset end 16 while the shank and straight portion of the blade is received 1n the slot 28, thus forming a complete closure for the blade and enabling the mplement to be compactly folded and read 11y carried.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction, application and use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A screw-driver comprising a solid handle having a broadened bifurcated end containing a curved row of spaced transverse openings, a blade pivoted in said handle coincidentally with the axis of said openings, said blade having an angularly turned end and containing an opening registerable with any of the openings in said handle, a pin re movably engageable in said opening whereby said blade is held rigidly in adjustment, and means for securing said pin to said handle.
2. A screwdriver comprising a solid handlehaving a broadened bifurcated endcontaining a pivot screw and a plurality of spaced openings arranged concentric with said screw, a blade pivoted in said handle on said screw, said blade having an opening registerable with any of the openings in said handle, means passing through said openings for holding said blade in adjustment, means preventing loss of said holding means, and means in said handle permitting folding the blade therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
