Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. RILEY, 01 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SANITARY VENDING-TRAY FOB TABLES.
Application filed March 16, 1920. Serial No. 366,335.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns WELK RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Impipovements in Sanitary Vending-Trays for atables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vending paraphernalia and has for its objectto provide a sanitary vending tray for edibles and particularly to provlde a device of this kind that provides ample-capacity forcarrying the goods to be vended and at the same time to leave the same fully exposed to view but protected from contamination by street dust when the tray is carried about by the vender. The invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details and arran ements of the parts, an embodiment of which invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied to the body of the vender.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the detached device with parts in section.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section indicating a means for securing complementary parts of the cover in folded relation. I
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank of the cover.
Street vendors of confections commonly carry the same in exposed position in a tray a form of which is shown as comprising a receptacle having a bottom 2 with a marginal flange 3 of suitable height surrounding the bottom 2. This receptacle or tray is de-.
signed to be suspended from the shoulders of the vendor by means of shoulder straps or other suitable harness indicated at 4 having front members attached as at 5 to the side flanges/thus enabling the tray to be disposed across the front of the waist of the wearer in a convenient position to be reached and exposing the goods to be sold.
The present invention consists of a cover forming a window and shield which while exposing the goods to view protects the same from dust. The cover may be made of a single piece of bendable transparent material such as celluloid. The blank may be shaped as desired to conform to a given type of receptacle 2. form of which blank is show in Fig. 4 as comprising a substantially oblong body portion 6 the outer edge of which is inwardly slitted at 7 and along the outer edge are provided perforations 8. Extend- 1ng from the intermediate portion of the. opposite longitudinal edge is a leaf part 9 somewhat shorter than themain bod part 6 and the inner portions of the end ed ges 10 of the leaf 9 are cut on an inwardl 1ng curve as at 11 merging into the longitudinal line 12. The outer corner of the leaf 9 may be perforated as at 13. V
The blank of this kind is adapted to have the intermediate longitudinal ed e between the slits 7 laid around on the inside surface of the flange 3 of the tray while .the corner portlons 14 are sprung out over the outer surface of the flange; the latter extending upwardly 1nto the slits 7-7. Thus the body port1on 6 extends across the front of the tray and around the corners and sides as shown in Fig. 2 and suitable fastening means are passed through the apertures 8 to secure body portions 6 in an upright wall-forming position.
When thus arranged the leaf 9 may be folded to form an upper front corner 9' and the end edge portions 10 of the leaf can be folded down over theupper edges 12 of the wall and secured to the wall by suitable means comprising a bolt 15 passed through washers 16 between which the overlapped portions of the leaf 9 and the side walls are clamped. The ends of the'leaf 9 thus make a substantially tight joint over the upper edges 12 and an effective cover is provided yet permitting a clear view of the interior. Access may be had to the goods through the opening formed at the rear of the cover forming members when they are assembled.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A sanitary cover for street venders trays, comprising a single sheet of pliant transparent material, out to form a substantially oblong body portion, a leaf portion extending from the intermediate portion of the upper longitudinal edge of said body portion and being substantially shorter than the body portion, the ends of said leaf portion being cut inwardly from the juncture of the upper longitudinal edge of the body portion therewith, said cuts being an extension of the said edge, said body portion being bent to form extend- Q neeeme I e fi'ont and ends, and the leaf portion being bent end portions extending over the ends bent downwardl to form the top, the end of the body portion and secured thereto, the portions thereo being bent downwardly\ whole being secured to the tray. 10 along lines extending at substantially right In testimony whereof I have signed my 5 angles from the upper longitudinal edge of name to this specification. r V
the body portion and from the ends of the inwardly extending cuts, said downwardly JAMES Wu RILEY.
