FRANK B. NOFSINGEB, F KANSAS Cliff, MISSOURI.
CARTRDGE BSK.
Application filed July 1y 192i. Serial No. ell.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK B. liorsrnenn, a citizen of the United States, residing Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and. State of lilissouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cartridge Boxes; and do declare the yr"olloving to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as vwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to cartridge boxes and particularly to a container in which the cartridges can be initially packed for comniercial distribution and adapted to be subsequently utilized as a cartridge boX to be attached to a belt.
ln carrying out my invention, l prefer to provide a container of suiiicient capacity to contain a considerable number of shells, and to provide a sealing 'flap having a fastening device interchangeably7 connected with a fastening device on the bor; to form a closure therefor, and with a fastening device on the cover to form a supporting loop through which a belt may pass so that the purchaser may suspend the container from a belt so that ready access may be had to the cartridges.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cartridge box arranged as a container for commercial distribution of the cartridges.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover raised, with the sealing flap detached from the box, and
Fig. 3 is a. like view showing the sealing flap folded over to form a supporting loop and secured to the cover of the boX.
The invention is particularly applicable for use as a container yfor shot gun shells or cartridges and it is so shown in the dra-wings.
The box is illustrated as consisting of a bottonil 1. sides 2 and 3, and ends 4c and 5 to form a substantially rectangular container. The side 2, which constitutes the front of the bor., and the ends 4C and 5 are provided with flaps 6, 7, and 8 'at their upper edges. These iiaps may be folded over the cartridges as shown in Fig. 2, or they may be folded outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, depending upon how the box is to be used.
Extending from the side 3, which constitutes the rear wall, is a hinged cover '9 which may be an integral part of the side 3, said cover is provided with a sealing flap, or extension. 10, having a restricted portion or tongue 11 provided with a fastening device 12 adapted to alternately engage complementary fastening device 13 on the front 2 of the box, or a corresponding fastening device 1l on the inner face of the cover 9. For convenience l have shown two headed members 13 and 14 constructed to conform to the well known snap or glove fastener. The members 13 and 14 are the headed members and the complementary member 12 is the socket member. When the device is to be used initially as a container for the shells yfor commercial distribution, the shells will be placed in the boX with the flaps 6, 7 and 8 folded inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and the cover 9 will be folded over the top, and the sealing flap 10 will be folded down over the front 2 so that the socket 12 can engage the headed fastening member 13.
When the purchaser procures the box or case of shells and desires to use the shells, he seal 15, if one is present, can be broken, the flap l0 can be detached from the fastening 13 and the socket 12 may be folded over a band or belt 16 worn by the user and the fastener or socket 12 can be engaged with the headed member 14 to form a supporting loop7 as shown in 9;, whereby the bor; will be suspended from the belt within easy reach of the user, the flaps 6, 7, and 8 at this time being preferably turned outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3.
lt will, therefore, be apparent that the container will amply serve both as a shipping case and a serving case or box7 it being only necessary to detach the flap 10 from engagement with the fastener 13 and cause the socket member 12 to engage the headed member le to suspend thedevice `from the belt 16. lt will also be apparent that the device can be used interchangeably without restriction and without adding or detaching any of the parts of which it originally con sists.
W hat l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cartridge box comprising a container having a hinged cover and a flap on one edge thereof, a fastening device on the inner face of the cover and on one face of the box, and
a fastening device on the :Hap adapted to interchangeably engage the first named fas- `telling device; v y
2. A cartridge box having an open upper end, a cover connected thereto'and having a flap foldable over the front of the box.
`means for securing the flap to the front of the box to close it, and means for sealing the Hap to the inner face of the cover to provide a loop whereby the box may be suspended Vfrom a belt.
3. A cartridge box having an open upper end provided with af cover, an extension on the cover foldable against the same to provide a loop, means for interchangeably securing the extension to the cover, and means forsecuring the extension to the front face of the ,box to maintain the ooverin closed position.
' 4. A cartridge box having an open ,upper end provided With a cover, an extension on the cover foldable against the saine to provide a loop, means lfor interchangeably securing the extension tothe cover, means for securing the extension to the front face ofv r the box to maintain the cover in olosedfposition, and a sealing band for covering the end of the extension when it is secured to the front o f the box.l
5. A cartridge box having an open end, a cover therefor, a fastening flap onthe cover, a snap fastening element on the flap, and complementary snap. vfastening members on the cover andbox, and adapted'to be interchangeably connected fastening element von vthe fastening `flap.
In testimony whereof I afIix my signature.
FRANK B. NOF SINGER.
