Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed December 1, 1919. Serial No. 341,673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that of El Centro, in the county of Imperial and State of California, administratrix of the estate of WILLIAM F. KEELINE, late a citizen in the county of Imperial and State of California, do hereby declare that said WILLIAM F. KEELINE has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit- Pickers Bags, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates generally to fruit pickers bags and more particularly to certain improvements looking toward the comfort of the user, the object being the provision of a bag whose upper portion is held open at all times adjacent to its receiving mouth and has at the same time a flexible portion adjacent to the users body to avoid the discomfort of rigid unyielding or stiff bag mouth supports as commonly used at the present time.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention,
Figure 1 is a detail perspective v1ew of the bag complete,
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section on an enlarged scale through the center of the upper front portion of the bag,
Fig. 3 is a similar view through the upper 'rear portion of the bag,
ig. 4: is a rear elevation portion of the bag,
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 4;, 1
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the shoulder strap supporting members, Fig. 7 is a horizontal section through a portion of one side of the upper end of the of the upper fieferring now to these figures, the usual flexible bag is generally indicated at 10, and in practice has its lower end open and provided in one edge with an inclosed stiffenin wire, held by binding a portion of the adjacent bag around the wire to form a remforced rigid edge 11. Bracing strips preferably of leather, as indicated at 12, are also utilized and the reinforcing rod has e es 13 receiving the lower ends-of the rope 11ft 14. This rope lift has an upper engaging eye piece 15 for detachable connectlon with a hook member 16 attached by a strap and the like 17 to the upper front portion of the bag mouth, as best seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
I, Mrs. W. F. KEELINE, th
The invention has to do in particular with e formation of the upper portion of the bag and proposes the use of a rigid U-shapel formed the upper inat the forward inclosed by turned edge 19 of the bag portion of the receiving mouth thereof, and the ends of which member 18 are connected by an inner flexible bag mouth section ineluding 1n part an inner flexible reinforcmg str p 20, preferably a narrow web, the extremities of which are turned around and secured to the extremities of the wooden support or hoop 18, particularly as shown in Fig. 7. The upper edge 19 of the bag at the rear of its mouth is inturned around th1s strip 20.
Adjacent to its extremities and at relatively opposite sides of the receiving mouth of the bag, the rigid support or hoop 18 recelves the lower bent portions 21 of a pair of shoulder strap supporting brackets 22, having upper eyes 23 to receive hooks 24 at opposite ends of the shoulder strap 25, the upper inturned edge 19 of the bag 10 being cut around the bent portions .21 and being also inturned around the flexible connecting web 20 as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 3.
The flexible mouth section of the bag also includes straps 26 which extend along the outer surface of the bag mouth with bent ends 26 lapping the ends of the rigid hoop 18 and riveted or otherwise secured thereto, and the flexible portion of the bag mouth also includes a leather or other piece 27, somewhat broader than the web 20 which connects the inner ends of the straps 26 and is secured by rivets 28 which pass therethrough and through the flexible web 20 as well as through the adjacent portion of the inturned edge 19 of the bag itself.
In this way a comfortable readil yieldable body engaging feature is intro uced in connection with the bag mouth, the latter being rigidly held in open receiving posi-' tion at the same time, so that the user has all of the advantages to be had with the ordinary construction, and in addition thereto may proceed in the pickin operation and carry a partly filled or full ag from place to place without the discomfort of the usual construction. claim A fruit pickers bag comprising a flexible body having an upper open mouth, a substantially rigid U-shaped frame at the forward portion of the'open mouth around which the forward portion of the upper edge of the body is secured, a flexible connecting strip secured at its opposlte ends to the opposite ends of said U-frame and around which the rear portion of the upper ed e of the body is secured, reinforcing 10 strlps externally ofthe bag mouth, secured to said connecting strip at their inner ends and to the U-frame at their outer ends, and a wear strip extending along the rear portion of the bag mouth and secured at its opposite ends to the inner ends of said reinforcing strips and also secured intermediate its ends to the said connecting strip.
