Description
My`28, 1935. J. w. osi-EN GOLF BAG Filed Dec. 8, 1932 Patented May 28, 1935 UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE GOLF BAG Joseph Osten, Chicago, Ill. Applicatiofneeembefjs, 1932, serial No. 646,262 ,s claires. `11"(011150--1-5) My invention relates to a golfbag ofthe type commonly known as particular reference` the staylessfbag, and hasV to a golf bagfconstruction member is formed for and also having means from collapsing entirely the ground:
Another and further object of my vinvention is the provision of a golf bag construction' having a pair of stays placed therein in suchimanner that the bag at the reinforced and the weight handle portion thereof is of thebag distributed throughout a large portion of the body thereof at one side, instead the point of the bod of. being concentrated `at y of the bag to which the handle is attached, thereby resulting in the bag being pulled out of wear on the body of handle is attached.
Another and further the provision of aV golf shape and causing abnormal the golf bag to which the object of my invention is bag having stays which extend throughout the upper portion of the bag on each side of and for some distance above and below the handle, and which are sufliciently stiff to prevent the collapsing when it is bag, which when collapses from the ters of gravity of the upper part of the golf bag from set on the ground, a comstayless type of golf golf clubs so that when the bag is picked up the weight of the golf clubs causes the bag to tip onto the ground. With my a avoided and the `top of the tion this difculty is and the clubs fall out improved construcbag will always remain sufficiently high on the golf clubs so that the bag and clubs can be picked up without danger of the clubs falling out onto the ground.
These and other objects of my invention will be more fully and better understood by reference to the accompanying Whichsheet of drawings, in
Figure 1 is an elevational view of aV golf bag embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view throughout the body of the golf bag therein;
showing the stays secured Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of the inside of the golf bag showing the stays positioned in the upper Figure 4 is a cross of Figure 3.
Referring now spec part thereof; and sectional view on line 44 iiically tothe drawing, and
in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout, a g
olf bag is shown having the usual body portion I0, around the bottom of which a reinforcing member II is placed in the usual manner, with a top portion I2 being provided Which is stitched to the body portion vII! of the bag in the usual manner. A ball pocket 5 I3 is provided with a reinforcing strip I4 being provided which extends under the reinforcing member I2 at the top and down into the pocket I3, and is secured to the body of the golf bag by stitching or in anyiother approved manner. 10 Between the reinforcing member I4 and the body I9 of the bag, adjacent the marginal edges of the reinforcing member I4, I provide a pair of metallic stays I5, I5, these stays being preferably of metal construction preferably about f7, 15 of an inch wide and V1/8 of aninchrthick. Near the `bottoms of the stays I5 are a plurality of spaced openings4 I6, I6V through the body `Il) of the golf bag and through which the members I5 extend. Similar slits I1, I1 are provided at the 20 upper portion of the bag through which the reinforcing members extend adjacent their upper ends, so that they are held in proper spaced relation under the reinforcing member I4.
A handle I8 is provided which is secured 25 through the reinforcing member I4 and therbody I0 of the golf bag by means of rivets I9, I9 at its upper end and lower end, the handle I8 being riveted through the body of the bag between the reinforcing stays I5, I5. Y
The usual shoulder strap 20 is provided, which is secured by means of a buckle 2|, with a loop 22 passing through the body of the golf bag and the reinforcing member I4 by means of rivets I9, I9 at the lower end, and is stitched through the 35 reinforcing member on the body of the golf bag at its upper end in the usual manner of securing shoulder straps to golf bags. It will be noticed that both the shoulder strap 20 and the handle I8 are secured to the reinforcing member I4 and 40 through the body I9 adjacent the stays I5, so that as the golf bag is lifted with either one of these members the weight is sustained largely upon the reinforcing stays I5 and thereby distributed throughout the upper portion of the golf 45 bag rather than having the entire weight of the bag sustained from the upper and lower points of the handle I8 or the upper and lower points of the shoulder strap 29. In this manner the life of the golf bag is materially increased as well as its appearance, vbecause stayless bags when carried by the shoulder strap or handle assume an elongated position and through wear and constant weight hanging on the straps and handles, the body of the bag is torn and presents an un- .f ing near the longitudinal V sightly appearance. In addition to adding to the appearance of the bag, therefore, the life of the bag is also materially increased.
When the bag is set down on the ground or laid down by a player, the lower portion of the bag will collapse but the upper part of the bag is prevented from collapsing due to the stays I5, l5, so that the top of the bag will not slide down over the golf clubs to a point where, when the bag is picked up, it'will tipV and lallo-w the'clubs to slide out, as is common with stayless bags which are now in service. The top of the bag will remain sufficiently high on the golf clubsv so that when picked up the clubs will remain in their proper position in the bag or will slide toward the bottom of the bag. Y
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction. I `do not 'vi/'ish toxbe understood as limiting myself thereto, as 1ccn-` template changes in form and the proportion of par-ts andthe substitution of equivalentsas circumstances rmay suggest or .renderfexpedient Without departing from the spirit or `scope of `the invention. Y
