LEONARD ROMANIELLO, OF DUNlVIORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
RnvoLvING To'Y.
` Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Apr. 2.o, 1920.
Application filed October 8, 1919. Serial No. 329,232.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEONARD RoMANrELLo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunmore, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Revolving Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a revolving toy of a type designed to be revolved by air pressure, and one object of my invention is to provide a toy, such as a boat, presenting 'a surface, such as a sail, on which air pressure may act to revolve the boat, the said boat being mounted for freeand easy revoluble movement upon a support.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for mounting the boat upon the support and for counterbalancing the weight of the boat so that it will be perfectly balanced and will revolve freely upon its supporting aXis.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which z- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a revolving toy embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the weight supporting bracket.
Fig. 3 is a perspective' view of the boat supporting arm.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a suitable upright support or standard 1 mounted upon a base 2, said standard carrying at its upper end a pivot member 3, consisting preferably of a pin tapering to a substantially needle point.
Pivotally mounted upon the pin 3 is a revolving body 4, shown as a boat-shaped body provided with one or more sails 5. This body 4 is arranged upon one side of the standard or support 1 and is provided at its stern end with an arm 6 which is journaled or pivoted for rotation on the bearing pin 3. As shown, this arm 6 preferably consists of a metallic stem round in cross section and having a pointed end 7 whereby it may be driven into the body, the
u opposite end of said stem being formed on its underside with an indentation or recess 10 to receive the point of the pin 3, whereby the body 4 is detachably mounted upon said pin 3 and is fitted to revolve freely thereon.
For the purpose of counterbalancing the weight of the body 4, I provide a pair of substantially spherical-shaped counterbalancing weights 11 arranged on the opposite side of the standard 1 from said body 4, and which are jointly of substantial weight to counterbalance sensitively and accurately the weight of said body. These weights are mounted upon the free ends of the branches of a substantially V-shaped bracket 12, the bight or looped portion 13 of which bracket extends beneath the middle portion of the body 4, adjacent to the stern end thereof and is engaged with a fastening member 14 whereby it is fastened to said body. The main portions of the branches of the bracket 12 are disposed in a substantially horizontal position, and at their points of juncture with the bent looped portion of the bracket the branches are engaged with hooks or fastening members 15 on the body 4, whereby the bracket is securely fastened to the body and braced at the latter points mentioned. The fastening members 14 and 15 are preferably in the form of hooks allowing the bracket 12 to be applied to and removed from the body 4 in an obvious manner, so that the parts of the toy may be disasso ciated and packed in close compass when not used or within a box for storage or sale.
In the operation of the device, it is mounted upon the support 1 in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1, the body 4 thus being accurately balanced and journaled on the pin 3, so that by blowing against the sails 5 or disposing the same in the path of a wind current the body may be rapidly revolved upon the axis 3, affording interest and amusement to the operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising a support, a revolving boatshaped body carrying a sail, a bearing pin upon the support, an arm projecting longitudinally from the stern of the body and journaled on said pin, a bracket fixed to the body and having branches projecting therefrom beyond the arm and on the opposite side of the bearing pin from the boatshaped body, and Weights carried by said branches and operating to counterbalance the Weight of Said boat-shaped body. Y
2. A device of the characte1- described comprising a support, a bearing pin on said support terminating in a bearing point, a boat-ishaped body carrying a sail and arranged on one side of said pin, an arm projecting from said Vboat-shaped body and having an indentation receiving the bearing 10 point of the pin, and means carried by the boat-Shaped bodyv and projecting beyond the opposite side of'said bearing pin for counterbalancing the Weight of said body.
In testimry whereof I aflix my signature. 15
