APPLICATION FILED FEB. 23. 1921.

' INVENTOR. CLfi/Pfi 5. 5/72,
- E T E ras CLARA BKSITZ, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
HAIRPIN.
Application filed February 23, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA B. Srrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hairpins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acco panying drawings.
This invention relates to hair-pins and has for an object to provide .a hair-pin with improved means for retaining in position and anchored by the pin looks or strands of hair not included or inclosed within the tines of the pin.
-A further object of the invention is to provide a hair-pin having the usual and ordinary tines and with wings outstanding lat erally from the lines of the pin providing means for engaging with hair terior of the pin.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair-pin having spaced tines with wings outstanding laterally from the lines of the pin and curved toward the point of the tines, whereby hooks are formed for. the engagement of looks or strands of hair upon the outside of the pin. 7
lVithv these and other objects .in view the device comprises certain novel constructions, convolutions and combinations as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view of the improved hairpin in side elevation;
Fig- 2 is a view of the improved hair-pin in edge elevation;
Fig. 3 is a view of the improved hair-pin in top plan, and
Fig. 41 is a sectional view of the hair-pin on the line indicated by line l-4 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts and elements throughout the several views.
As is customary in hair-pins the present invention is provided with tines 10 spaced apart and here shown as provided with a plurality of waves, but the particular construction as to this feature is not essential to the present invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
upon the ex Patented Got. 1, 1921. Serial No. 447,046.
. The tines 10 are bent outwardly at 11 and a return bend 12 formed upon each side with the intervening wire twisted, as at 13. As shown also, sufficient wire is provided to form a tang 14 which extends downwardly between the tines 10, twisted as at 15, although the tang 14c or this formation of the twist is immaterial to the present invention, such tang, when coupled with the tines 10, being a substantially well-known form of hair-pin. The invention resides rather in the wings eX- tending laterally from the hair-pin structure disclosed as the tines 10 and tang 14, such wings being curved downwardly at the bend 13, or throughout their entire length, to produce hook formations, as shown more particularly at Fig. 1. It will be obvious that when the hair-pin structureis forced into the hair in the usual manner, the return bends 12 will enter the hair and will retain between such hooks and the tines 10 any looks or strands of hair which may be introduced, and for this purpose strands or looks of short hair or otherwise unattached hair may be manually inserted within the hooks before the hair-pin is pushed home, thereby confining such locks within the hooks.
It is well known that after a hair-pin has been inserted in the hair, locks of hair will be found to be escaping from confinement,
and in such cases a slight withdrawal of the hair-pin to release one of the hooks 12 will permit such strands to be inserted beneath such hook when the hair-pin may again be pushed into position, retaining the hair in neat and artistic arrangement.
\Yhat I claim to be new is:
A hairpin comprising spaced tines, an integral cross-bar spanning the interval between and extending laterally beyond the tines at one end, being folded upon itself and twisted outside of the lines of the tines with the folded ends curved toward the opposite ends of the tines and their component parts positioned broadside toward the tines.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
CLARA B. SITZ.
