useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This application, as regards some of the principal features set forth, relates to a modification of the breechblock mechanism which is described and set forth in myPatent No. 1,348,733, dated August 3, 1920, and granted on my copending application (re-v newal) Serial No. 311,689, filed July 17th, 1919, and which modification is referred to in my said patent but is not specifically claimed therein, and to which patent reference may be had. i
One class of firearms to which my present improvements are applicable includes autoloading pistols. I
An improved auto-loading pistol of this kind is described in my said patent. Therefore, for convenience of illustration, I have herein illustrated my present improvements as arranged and applied to the particular kind of auto-loading pistol which is shown Y in the drawings of said application, to which reference may be had. .c
One object of the present improvements is to furnish for use in firearms and especially for use in auto-loading pistols, animproved slide-and-block mechanism in which the breechblock is movable with the slide, and is movable rearwardly prior to `rearrward movement of the slide and being in engagement therewith transmits rearward movement to the slide, and after sucli'tr'a-ns.- mission the breechblock is retarded init-s rearward movement, and retardedrelatively to the slide while theslide is moved rearwardly, and during the cartridge shell` ejecting period, and locked to the slide 'forconcurrent rearward movement lof the slide and breechblock; this being accomplished by engagement of the breechblock with the frame of the pistol, and by means for connecting the breechblock to the slide'coacting with the breechblock and slide.r
Other objects andfz tdvantages'areV indi-v cated or pointed out inthe course of the following' description.
An embodiment of the invention 1s illustrated in the accompanying drawingsl in which:
Figure 1, is a side view, partly broken away to show the details of a pistol provided with my slide-and-breechblock mechanism, the slide and breechblock being in forward or normal position, and the ring member or hammer being in iringposition.
' Fig. 2, is a detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3, is a fragmentary detail sectional view, on a larger scale thanFig. 1, of a pistol provided with my slide-and-breechblock mechanism, showing the breechblock in course of rearward movement into engagement with the abutment face of the frame for retarding the breechblock after transmission of rearward movement from the breechblock to the slide, but prior to retardation of the breechblock relative to the slide while thev slide is moved rearwardly.
Fig. 4, is a fragmentarydetail sectional view, on the same scale as Fig. 3, of a pistol provided with myl slide-and-breechblock mechanism, showing the breechblock moved rearwardly during movement of the firing member `or hammer to fired position, the breechblock notryet being free from engagement' with the abutment face of the frame for retarding the breechblock in its rearward movement. A
Fig. 5, is a fragmentary detail sectional view o ta pistol provided with my slideand-breechblock mechanism, showing-,the breechblock freev from engagement with the abutment faceof the frame for retarding rearward movement of the breechblock, vand subsequent to retardation vof the breechblock relative to the slide, the breechblock and slide being locked together and moved concurrently rearward, and the iiringmember `or hammer beingV moved to firing position by rearward movement of the slide.

in the drawings, and is received in and is movable with the slide C, and comprises the firing-pin P. The breechblock E is provided near its rear end with an inclined lower-face or abutment-face 51, which is engageable with the abutment face 2f of the frame or receiver B, and is provided with an inclined Vfront Vface 5k which is engageable with the inclined lower face 335 of the slide, andY is provided with an upper face 5d which is en- 1 gageable with the blocking face 3b of the slide. A rear or end face 5f is provided on the breechblock E which is engageable with the vertical or stop-face 3* of the slide. The intersection of the faces 5d and 5t ofthe breechblock E forms a junction point or engaging end* 11, which engages the guide-face lO of the slide C, which junction point or engaging end 11 is somewhat rounded the better to engage the guide-face 10. The faces 33f, 33e and 31 of the slide C afford a recess or space. for the reception therein of the breechblock E, when the breechblock is in raised or lifted position for concurrent movement with the slide C, the faces 3b and 33e providing respectively an engaging surface for the face 5l of the breechblock to limit upward movement of the breechblock,
and clearance space for the breechblock.
, The slide C is provided with a roller 3 which is engageable with the front face of the firing member or hammer H, when the slide is moved rearwardly and the firing member or hammer is in fired position, which roller 3c rides over the firing member or hammerv and moves it to firing position, but instead of a roller a Vcontacting or rear face of the slide may be arranged for this purpose. The firing member or hammer when infired position is engageable with the firing pin P.
Links L6 are pivotally attached at their upper ends to the slide C and.V at their lower ends to the breechblock E, a link to each side of the slide and to each side of the breechblock. y
The, links L6' are preferably attached to I the slide C by a bolt C8, and are attached to the breechblockby pins C7, but any form of attachment may be used which will provide Y pivotal movement of the links at their upper and lower ends. The sides of the slide may be slotted as at 12, to allow pivotal Vor swinging movement of the links L6.
In operation: The force of the powder gases is first exerted upon the breechblock E to move it rearwardly. Y
The face 5t ofthe breechblock being in engagement with the face 3 of the slide rearward movement is thereby transmitted from the breechblock to the'slide. As the breech block moves rearwardly the face 51 of the breechblock engages the face 2f of the frame and the breechblock is retarded in its rearward movement and the rear end thereof is pulled up or lifted by the links L, and the face 51 of the breechblock rises onV the abutment face 2f of the frame of the pistol. The junction or point 11 of the faces 5d and 5t of the breechblock being in enga ement with the guide-face 10 of the Slide, there is a retardation of the breechblock relative to the slide C while the slideis moved rearwardly and when the face 51 of the breechblock clears or is free from engagement with the' abutment face 2f of the frame of the pistol, and the. rear end of the breechblock is locked in the recess orspace comprised by the faces 331, 33e and 3P of the slide, and pulled along or drawn concurrently rearwardly with the slide. i During the transmission of rearward movement from the breechblock E tothe slide C, the links L6 receive the thrust of the breechblock E and act asa thrust member for holding down the breechblock, and after temporary stopping or retardation of the breechblock by the abutment face 2f of the frame of the pistol, and as the slide moves rearwardly, the links Ls pull upwardly or lift the rear end of the breechblock and act as a tension member.
The guide-face 10 of the slide by engagementv with the junction point or engaging end 11 of the faces 5l and 5f of the breechblock coacts with the links L6 to guide the breechblock E in its rearward movement Y relatively to the slide C and into position wherein the breechblock is locked to the slide C and moves concurrently rearwardly therewith. It is obvious that only one link L6 may be. used, but the use of two links is preferred.
, In my said patent, reference being had thereto, I have described and shown guidelinks L as a modification for controlling and into the position shown in Figs. 4 and 3, and
finally, intoV the position shown in Fig. 1,
said figures being considered relative to for-V ward movementof the breechblock, the
breechblock E and slide C then being respectively in forward or normal position. The firing member or hammer H having been moved to ring position by the before mentioned rearward movement of the slide C, is locked in ring position by a sear member not shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
