Description

J. L. HAWLEY.
RAILWAY JOURNAL BOX JACK.
APPLICATION FILED FEB-19,1921- Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. HAWLEY, 0F SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 JOHN M.
HAWLEY, OF BLYTHEWOOD, SOUTH CAROLINA.
RAILWAY-JOURNAL-BOX .mcx.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 20, 1921.
Application filed February 19, 1921. Serial No. 446,422.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES L. HAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county'of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Journal-Box Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway ournal box jacks, and more particularly to a clamp structure for engaging the end of the journal box in such a manner that the box can be easily raised by tightening the clamp, and the aws of clamp which engage the end of the journal are so shaped as to allow plenty of clearance above them for the removal of the journal brasses for renewal.
Further features and details of the invention will appear as described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and hereinafterset forth and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the figures, in which,'
Figure 1 is an elevation view partly in section showing a clamp made in accordance with my invention holding a ournal box in elevated position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view-on line 2-2 of Fig. 1-showing the upper jaws of the clamp engaging the collar of a journal.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation of the clamp engaging the journal-eon line 3-3 of Fig. 2. v
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational section of the lower end-of the clamp. I
Referring to the drawings the journal box is generally designated by the letter A, the journal by B, and clamp by C. The ournal box is of usual construction, likewise the journal and is provided with a collar D and brasses etc, E. V
The clamp C comprises a yoke member terminating at one end in a pair of jaw members F spread apart, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, formed with under faces which are adapted to fit snugly against the collar D and may also have projections G extending downwardly over the collars if desired. It will be noted that these jaws are so arranged that their upper surfaces The other end of the yoke member has a screw threaded opening, or as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, it may be rovided with a removable screw member held from turning by means of a key I. In this threaded opening is a screw J provided with a jaw member or block K for engaging under the journal box A. On the lower end of the screw is a ratchet Wrench L of any desired type for turning the screw to raise or lower the aw K.
W hen the clamp is positioned on a journal and box as shown in Fig. 1 it will readily be seen that by turning the screw J to elevate the block it will free the brasses and they may be replaced by new ones, and upon reverse rotation of the screw J the box A will assume its normal position and the clamp may be removed.
An advantage of a clamp constructed as herein set forth is that it is lighter than the jacks now in general use for the same purpose and it has been found that one man can easily operate it and make the changes and adjustment of the brasses etc, by himself, and with a great saving in time over former methods.
Having shown and described one embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to have it confined closely to the specific structure shown, it being understood that changes may be made in form, proportion, and organization of its various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A railway journal box jack comprising a clamp having a yoke and pair of integral jaw members extending at substantially right angles with the yoke and in angular relationship with each other whereby they may engage the end of the axle at two separated points, and means on the lower portion of said yoke adapted to engage the journal box for raising and lowering it with respect to the axle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES L. HAVVLEY.
