Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE J. Brnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State of Nashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheel and Jack Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved wheel and jack clamp, for use in removing and replacing the brasses of railway car axle bearings, the object of the invention being to provide an improved clamp of this character which may be readily attached to and removed from a rail; which serves to hold the car wheel down on the rail, prevents the wheel from turning and also serves to support the jack used for raising the axle box and bearing.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrange ment of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wheel and jack clamp constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the same in use.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing the rail in section and also showing the car wheel partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a supporting bar 1 which is provided near the ends with brackets 2 for engagement with a track rail a and to support said bar in a horizontal position on the outer side of the track rail and at a slightly lower level than the head of the same. The brackets are each provided with a hook 3 at the inner end to engage over and against the inner side of the rail head and each bracket is also provided with a downwardly extending arm 4 for arrangement on the outer side of the rail and to hear at its lower end on the outer base flange of the rail as shown in Fig. 2. The bar 1 is secured to the outstanding arms 5 of the bracket by bolts 6. Associated with each bracket is a wedge 7 for engagement between the inner side of the arm 4: and the outer channel of the rail, as shown, said wedges coacting with the hooks 3 and the brackets to level the bar 1 and to also secure the device to the rail and yet permit the brackets to be readily disengaged from the rail after first removing the wedges 7. Preferably the wedges are connected to the arms 4. of the brackets by chains 8 as here shown, to prevent the wedges from becoming lost or misplaced.
The bar 1 is provided on the outer side at the center with a suitable grip handle 9. The bar serves to support a jack 7) for use under the journal box 0 to raise and support the latter and permit the removal'and replacement of the brass.
The bar 1 is also provided with a centrally arranged arm 10 which extends inwardly therefrom and is secured to the under side thereof by bolts 11. Said arm has an upturned and inwardly inclined inner portion 12 having a threaded opening engaged by an inclined screw 13. A jaw 14 to engage in the lower side of the car wheel (Z is swivelly connected to the lower end of the screw.
It will be understood that the device serves to hold the wheel down on the track and prevent the wheel from turning and also serves to support the jack. Moreover the wheel andjack clamp does not require the operator to put his hands over the rail and hence avoids the danger of injury to the operator, when the clamp is in use.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The herein described wheel and jack clamp comprising a jack supporting bar, brackets to support said bar and having hooks to bear on and engage the inner side of the head of a rail and also having a clamping arm extending upwardly and inwardly from the bar, an adjusting screw extending through a threaded opening in said clamping arm and a jaw securely connected to the lower end of the screw and arranged to engage the lower outer side of a car wheel.
