DAVIS MABINSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB TO DAVID HOROWI'IZ, OF BROOK- LY N NEW YORK.
HAIB-CURLING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and effective in operation, and which may be used with equal facility at either side of the head and by means of which the hair ma be easily curled without the use of heat, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of theclass specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. a
The invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that described and claimed in a prior U. S. Patent No.
983,074 granted to me January 31, 1911, and
the invention is fully disclosed in the following s ecification, of which the accompanying rawin forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters 1n each of the views, and in which:--
Fi ure 1 is a side edge view of a hair curling dhvice involving my invention; i c ig. 2 a front view thereof; Fig. 3 a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale and with part of the construction broken away;
Fig. 4 a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a back View of a modified form of hair curling device; i
Fig. 6 a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 on an enlarged scale and with part of the construction broken away; and,
Fig. 7 a section on the line 7--7 of Fig. 6. In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. '1 to 4 inclus ve, I provide a hair curlin device a comprising two flexible strips% and c composed ofany suitable flexible material, metal, rubber or the like, and
Specification of Letters Patent.
for the purpose of this description, the strip 6 will be called the-back c the front strip. i I c The strips b and c are preferably approximately about the same width as shown in the drawing, except that one end of the front strip 0 is slightly tapered as shown in Fig. 2. The back strip 6 is provided at each end with a head member b having a central aperture 6 and mounted on said back strip is a slide member d to which the front strip a is hinged as shown at (P, The slide member d comprises a yoke-shaped part d? through which the larger end of the strip 0 is passed and folded to form a sleeve d through which is passed a pivot or hinge pin (i which is also passed through the side members of the yoke-shaped part di, and this forms a hinge connection for the part c with the part b, and with this construction the front strip 0 is free to slide on the back strip b, and whenthe slide member d is at either end of the back strip 6 the end 0 of the front strip 0 may be passed through the aperture 6 in the other end of said back strip as will be readily understood.
ith this form of construction the free end of the front strip 0 may be detached from the backstrip and the hair may be wound on either of said strips, but prefer- Patented Sept. 13, 1921..
Application filed March 18, 1921. Serial No. 453,419.
strip and the strip ably on the back strip, and after this opera- I tion is completed the free end portion of the front strip 0 is passed through one of the apertures b according to the position of the slide member 03, and this will securely bind and hold the hair in the position in which it is wound andthe result of the operation of this device will be similar to that of others of'its classthough more effectual and lasting in its results. a
It will also be seen from the accompanying drawing and the foregoing description that there is a free space e between the hinged end of the front strip 0 and the back strip 6 at the point where the strip 0 r is connected with the slide member 03, and this in connection with the form of the slide member d and the hinge of the strip a, perslide member and prevents the hair from ad hering to any of the parts of the device at this point, and leaves it free to slide on the strip on which it is wound in the operation of detaching the device from the hair.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, I provide a back strip 7 of any suitable material and a flexible front strip 9, and the back strip f is provided with a central longitudinalslot f and mounted on said back strip is a slide member h which is yoke-shaped in form'and composedof parallel side parts or ears jz? and a back portion 71. the side edges of which are provided with inwardlyturned. lugs or projections h which fit in and are movable in the slot i of the part 7, and the lugs or projections h are designed to prevent the removal of theslide when in use from the part f and theoperation thereof to accomplish this result is clearly shown in Fig. 6.
The end 9 of the strip 9 is tapered so that it may be passed through the slot f and the other end thereof is hinged between the ears or side members 71. and the slide h, as clearly shown at i, said end of said strip 9 being formed into a sleeve 7: through which 'a hinge pin or pintle i is passed.
The form of the slide 72. and method of connecting the strip 9 therewith forms a free space y between the part 7 and the part 9, except wherethe tapered end g of the party is passed through the slot f and this permits of thehair being wound close up to therslide on thepart f in the use or operation of the device andthe hair. will not be entangled with said part in the operation of winding the hairon the part .7.
1 The ends of thejbackstripj f instead of being provided with circular heads as shown. in Figs. 1- and 2, are preferably tapered as shown at ffland this permits the hair to be easily slipped off or removed therefrom after being wound on the part f in the operation of using the device for curling the hair.
The method'of using this form of constructi'on will be. the same as that employed in usingthe device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive,--eXcept that the-hair will probably be woundon the part f only and .the tapered endof the strip 9 when the hair is fully wound onthe part fl will pass through the slot f as shown in Fig. 3 and. securely hold athe hair as long as desired on the strip or.
part: 7. l i 1 :It will be observed-that as with the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7. inclusive, the slide 03; cannot be detached from the'back strip bin the construction shown in Figs. 1 to .4. inclusive,.said detachment being prevented by the-heads b at the ends of the strips .b,and it will also'be seen with the construet-ionshown in Figs.;5 to 7' inclusive as=in the construction shown-in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the slide cannot be detached from the part on which it is mounted, the slot f being closed at both ends, and in this form of construction the slide it may be used at either end of the part on which it is mounted, and the free end of the strip g may be engaged with either end of said part, and this facilitates the use of the device as will be readily understood.
