EXTENSION ADJUSTABLE HANDLE.
Application filed January 6, 1921. Serial No. 435,558,
T 0 all whom it may 00mm.-
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB L. E. KLING- BEIL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Adjustable Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to extension adjustable handles and it has for its object to provide a handle consisting of two parts adapted to be thrown to varying angles with relation to each other and locked in adjusted position to thereafter constitute a rigid member by which motion may be imparted to some other part. A handle of this type is of very general application. There are many places where it is desirable toactuate a part by hand but where the space within which one is able to work is so limited that a long handle cannot be given the necessary movement. A handle of the type comprising the subject matter of the present invention is useful in connection with automobile jacks, automobile spring spreading devices such as is shown in my copending application serial number 435,559 filed on the 6 day of January, 1921, upon ratchet drills, upon wrenches and in many other places.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an extension handle constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing.5 designates a shaft to be turned, said shaft having an angular end 6 thereon, which receives a crank handle 7 constituting one of the elements of the extension handle. While I have illustrated the part 7 as being provided with an angular opening 8 to engage the angular end 6 of the shaft 5, it is manifest that this angular opening might just as readily engage a nut, the head of a stud or any other object to which a turning movement is to be imparted.
Given ample space within which to swing the element 7, it is manifest that the simplest way of accomplishing the desired object would be to make the element itself of sufficient length to get the necessary leverage. However it is frequently the case that the room within which the element 7 may swing is so limited that this element must neces- Specification of Letters Patent.

sarily be made quite short. therefore provide the extension handle 9 which has a yoke 10 pivoted thereto at '11. This yoke is adapted to embrace the handle 7 and to receive a wedge 12 which has teeth 13 that are adapted. to engage with arcuate teeth 14 formed upon the handle 9. By a downward thrust upon the handle 9 the wedge may be forced from between the handle 7 and the handle '9. By then adjusting the handle 9 toapproximately the desired angle with respect to the handle 7 and by then forcing the wedge 12 into place and giving the handle 9 a slight upward pull, the wedge will be bound between the handles 9 and 7, and movement may then be imparted to the liamle 7 by pulling upwardly upon the han- This arrangement provides means whereby the handles 9 and 7 may be adjusted at varying angles with respect to each other. Thus the handle 9 may be adjusted to the position where it will most effectively clear obstructions. I prefer to attach the wedge 12 to the handle 9 by means of a cord or other flexible device indicated at 15 which serves to prevent loss of the wedge and holds the wedge always in assembled relation with respect to the handle 9.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come Within either 7 the terms or the spirit of the aDDended claims.
Having described claim is: V
1. A device of the character described comprising a two part handle one of which constitutes an operating extension of the other, means to which one of said parts'is pivoted and which embraces the other of said parts and a wedge adapted to engage between said parts.
2. A device of the character described comprising a two part handleone of which constitutes an operating extension of the other, a yoke to which one of said parts is pivoted and embraces the other of said parts, a wedge adapted to fit between said parts and interengaging teeth between said wedgeand the end of one of said parts.
3. A device of the character described comprising a two part handle one of which constitutes an operating extension of the my invention, what I other, a yoke adapted to embrace one ofsaid parts, means for pivoting said yoke to the other of said parts, said last named part having a toothed end of arcuate formation and a wedge adapted to fit between said 5 parts and to lie within said yoke, said wedge having teeth along one of its sides adapted to engage the aforesaid arcuate teeth.
4. A structure. as recited .in claim 3 in combination with means for holding said wedge in assembled relation with respect to 10 one ofsaid parts. I 1
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature .in the presence of two witnesses.
