Description

A. M. 'BARHAM.
I TATTING SHUTTLE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 30; 1921.
1,890,188. PatentedSept. 6,1921.
[TE stares ANGELINE M. BAR/HAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, MISSISSIPPI.
{BATTING-SHUTTLE.
T 0 all whomit may concern Be it known that I, ANGELINE M. BARH'AM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Neshoba and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tatting Shuttle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tatting shuttles.
The object of the invention is to provide a shuttle of this character equipped with a removable bobbin similar to a sewing machine bobbin which may be readily wound on a sewing machine and inserted in the shuttle, and yieldably held therein.
Another object is to provide improved means for holding the bobbin in the shuttle and prevent the too rapid feeding or unwinding of the thread from the bobbin.
Another object is to provide a tatting shuttle with a longitudinally extending nose having a hooked terminal to be used in loosening the thread.
Another object is to provide a shuttle of this character equipped with simple and efficient tension means for preventing the thread being unwound too rapidly from the bobbin when using the shuttle.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a shuttle constructed in accordance with this invention with parts broken out and in section. I
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section; and
Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view showing the tension means for holding the thread.
The shuttle 1 constituting this invention is preferably made boat shaped as shown with a cavity 2 to receive and retain the thread carrying bobbin 3 which is similar to bobbins of this character used in sewing machines constituting a rod with disk like heads 4: at its opposite ends, said rod projecting beyond said heads to form journals to rotatably mount the shuttle in the bobbin. The end walls of the recess or cavity 2 are provided with bearings 5 and 6 extending longitudinally of the shuttle to receive said Specification of Letters Patent.

journals, the bearing 5 having a slot 7 eX- tending therefrom through the outer face of the shuttleto provide for the insertion and removal. ofthe bobbin. A spring 8v is mounted in the opposite end of the shuttle and has an eye through which the journal at one end of the bobbin is designed to be passed before it enters the bearing 6 so that the bobbin will be yieldably held in the shuttle to provide for its ready insertion and removal and to operate as a brake to prevent the too rapid unwindin of the thread from the bobbin.
One en of the shuttle l is provided with a longitudinally extending nose 9 equipped at its terminal with a hook shaped pick 10 designed to be'used for loosening the thread preferably against one of the inner walls of the recess or cavity 2 so that it will not interfere with the passage of the shuttle through the work and which will prevent the thread from being unwound too fast from the bobbin when tatting.
This tension device 11 is preferably constructed in the form of a spring metal buttonmounted on a pin 12 projecting laterally inward in the shuttle, and the face 13 of said button has yieldable engagement with the adjacent wall of the shuttle between which and said wall the thread from the bobbin is designed to pass and be yieldably held to prevent it being too rapidly unwound from the bobbin. Shuttle 1 may be constructed of any suitable material as may also the bobbin 3. To remove the bobbin when inserted as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 all that is necessary is to exert the longitudinal pressure against the head 4: which bears against spring 8 thereby releasing the journal at the other end thereof from the socket 5 and permitting it to slide through the slot 7 whereby the bobbin may be readily taken out of the shuttle for winding or replaceabove described permits the use of an ordinary sewingmachine bobbin and thereby effects a great saving in time in the winding of these bobbins which is usually done by hand.
The shuttles are extremely simple and cheap to manufacture being formed entirely of one piece of material except the spring 8 and the tension device 11.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications Within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction Withoutdeparting from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim is A boat-shaped tatting shuttle having a I bobbin chamber with bearings in its ends, a
bobbin having journals for insertion in said bearings and a tension device for the thread fed from said bobbin, mounted on one side Wall of the bobbin chamber and constructed in the form of aspring metal button, one face of which has yieldable engagement With the adjacent Wall of the bobbin chamber, between Which and said Wall the thread from the bobbin is designed to pass and be yieldably held to prevent its being too rapidly unwound from the bobbin.
