Description

C. A. ELEMENTS.
UNION SUIT.
APPLICATION FILED JAN- l'i 1-921- Patented Sept. 6, 1921..
INVENTOR.
RL A, ELEMENTS UNION-SUIT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, CARL A. CLEMENIrs, a citizen. of the United, States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union- Suits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in undergarments of the onepiece or union suit type. V The main objectsof this invention are,
First: To provide an improved garment of the union suit type in which the main portion of the garment may be made of nonelastic material and at the same time the gar- Inent will yield and accommodate itself to the various positions of the body of the wearer.
Second: To provide an improved union suit in which the rear opening is capable of considerable extension and is at the same time effectively closed.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a rear elevation of a garment embodying the features of my invention, various parts being shown mainly in conventional form.
Fig. II is a partial rear view of the garment with parts broken away to better disclose the structural details or features thereof.
Fig. III is a detail vertical section on line corresponding to line 33 of Figs. I and II, illustrating further structural details.
Fig. IV is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line k4 of Figs. I and II, further illustrating the structural fea tures.
Fig. V is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Figs. I and II, also illustrating the structural details or features.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar partsthroughout the,
several views, and the sectional views are Specification of Letters Patent.

taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at 'the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the upper portion of the back of the garment, 2
and 3 the lower portions of the back of the garment and 4 the legs thereof.
' Extending across the back is an insert,
comprising a pair of insert members 5 and 6. These are preferably formed of knitted material to provide elasticity. These insert members are disposed in a superimposed. relation as illustrated in Figs. III, IV and V, with their upper edges secured to the lower edge of the upper portion 1 of the body by the row of stitching 7 the lower edges of these inserts being unconnected. The upper edge of the inner back member 2 is secured to the lower edge of the inner insert member 6 while the upper edge of the 'outer back member 3 is secured to the lower edge of the outer insert member 5 with the adjacent edges of the back members in overlapping relation, providing a closure for the rear opening.
In the structure illustrated, the back member 3 has a flap-like extension 8 secured by the button 9. Although the shape of this extension and the degree of overlapping may be very greatly varied, as with the upper edges of the back members 2 and 3 secured in overlapping relation, as illustrated, to the insert members 5 and 6, the back members are normally held in closed position but yield freely with the movements of the body, owing to the yielding of the elastic insert members, and these acting independently are free to yield according to the stress thereon.
My improved garment is very economical to produce or manufacture, is comfortable for the wearer and durable in that the strains thereon are slight.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A union suit comprising a back having an insert composed of superimposed strips of elastic material both extending from side to side across the garment separate at their lower edges and secured at their upper edges to the upper part of the garment, the garment having a rear opening extending upwardly from the crotch to the insert, the
cured t the lower edge of the inner of said insert strips only, and the upper edge of the l outer of said back members being secured to the lower edge of the outer of said insert strips only with the edges of said back members normally in overlapping relation, whereby one-of the insert strips may yield independently of the other.
2. A union suit comprising a back having a pair of superimposed insert members, both extending-from side to side across the back with their upper edges secured to the portion of the back above the insert, their lower edges being separate permitting independent yielding of the members, the portion of the body below the insert comprising inner and outer lower back members disposed in overlapping relation providing a rear opening and a closure therefor, the upper edges of each of such inner and outer lower back members secured to the .lower edges of the corresponding insert members.
3. The combination in a union suit of a back comprising an upper back member and inner and outer lower back members, disposed in overlapping relation providing a rear opening and a closure therefor, and a pair of superimposed elastic insert members both extending from side to side across the back with their upper edges secured to the lower edge of the upper back member, their lower edges being separate and secured to the upper edges of thecorresponding lower back members so that the lower back members may yield independently for the purpose specified. l
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
