LAMP FOCAL ADJUSTMENT.
To all whom it may concern Be itknownthat I, ERNST G. K. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Focal Adfi ustments; and I do hereby declare that the fol- Y lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, an to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for focal adjustment of electric lamps with respect to reflectors, and the invention is herein shown as ap lied to head light lamps used on vehic es, and sometimes known as spotlam s. The urpose of the invention is to provide As shown in the drawings:

As shown in the drawings, 10 designates, as a whole, the lam casing, 11 the reflector, and 12desi ates t e lens which is supported across t e front open end of the casing.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
The lamp structure is herein shown as of that t pe illustrated in my U. S. Letters Patent umber 1,309,678, granted July 15, 1919, embracing a casln 14 to receive a take-up device for the con uctor cord 15 that leads to the lamp. Said casing is fixed to a support, as the upright post 16 of a wind shield frame, as by means of a suitable clamp 17. The lamp is supported from said casing by a bracket arm 18 on which the lamp casing is rotatlvely mounted to swing in vertical direction, and which arm is rotatively and detachably mounted on the casing to swin in a horizontal direction in the manner il ustrated in the aforesaid prior application.
20 designates an electric lamp, the base 21 of which is fixed in any suitable manner, as by means of the well-known bayonet joint, in a socket sleeve 22. Said socket sleeve fits within and is adapted to slide endwise of a flange or nipple 24 that is formed integral w1th and extends rearwardly from the rear wall of the reflector at the axis thereof. Extending transversely throu h said socket sleeve, and at a distance rom each side thereof, is a pin 26. As herein shown said pin extends also through a disk 27 which fits closely in the rear end of said sleeve and carries the terminals 28 (Fig. .6) to which one wire 29 of the conductor cord 15 is connected; said terminals engaging contacts on the rear end of the lamp base in a known manner.
The other wire 30 of the conductor cord extends into and is connected to a switch device, desi ated as a whole by 31,.that is operated y upper and lower push buttons 32. Said switch device is inclosed in a casing 33, which constitutes the neck of the lamp casing and which is fitted within a central opening in the rear Wall of said lamp casing and extends rearwardly therefrom and, as herein shown, a distance inside said wal Said neck constitutes means by which the amp casing may be manipulated. Said neck may be brazed or otherwise fixed tothe lamp casing. The rear end of the neck 33 is closed by a cap 35, the flange or rim 36 of which fits in overlapping engagement with the rear, expanded end of said neck.
Interposed between the rear central portion of the reflector and said pin 26, and surrounding the flange 24 of the reflector, is a spiral expansion spring 38 which tends to force the socket sleeve 22, and the lamp is made of a diameter to engage the said pin 26 at its ends, and a rearwardly extending fork member, the arms 41 of whichare turned laterally attheir forward ends 42 and are fixed to the rear face of the ring in any suitable manner, as by brazing or soldering.
Said fork arms terminate in a rearwardly directed threaded shank 44.
The arms 41 of the fork members extend through the neck 33 and are suitably guided therein, and the threaded shank 44 extends through a centralopening in the cap 35 and receives a threaded adjusted nut 45 that bears against and is swiveled to the rear end of'said cap. The arms of said adjusting fork members are'guided in endwise, movement between the wall of the neck 33 and va bushing 47 within said neck, said bushing being of a diameter to closely embrace the switch device 31 and to confine it therein. The walls of said bushing, at said fork arms, are provided with longitudinal, convex depressions, indicated at 48 inFigs. 2, 3 and 5, to receive the fork arms-41, and the fit between the bushing and neck is such that the parts are frictionally held from shifting.
The threaded connection of the nut with the shank 44 of the adjusting member 39 acts, through the pin 26 to,force the socket sleeve and the lamp carried thereby forwardly 'agains'tthe action of the spring 38,
and when proper focal adjustment of the lamp is attained the nut 45. serves to lock the parts in fixed adjustment. 5 p
I claim as my invention 1; Focal adjusting means for lamps comprising, in combination, a lamp casing, a reflector therein having an axial guide, a
' lamp socket slidable in said guide, a neck connected to saidcasing in axialhlinerhent with said guide, a pin extending transversely through said socket, a spring acting on said pin tending to move the socket outwardly,
a ring member bearing on said pin, and a screw threaded member having fork arms acting in opposition to said spring, the terminals ofthe arms bearing against sald ring on diametrically oppos te sidesthereof.
'2. Focal adjusting means for lamps comprising, in combination, a lamp casing, a
reflector therein having an axial guide, a I
lamp socket slidable in'said guide, a neck connected to said casing in axial alinement with said guide, a spring actin to move the lamp socket outwardly, a switch carrying bushing in said neck, and a screw threaded device acting at'its inner end against said socket in opposition to said spring and embracing fork arms which are guided between said bushing and neck and terminate in a screw threaded terminal,and a nut threaded to said terminal and engaging said neck.
3. Focal adjusting means for lamps comprising, in combination, a lamp'casing, a reflector therein having an axial guide, a lamp socket slidable in said guide, a neck connected to said casing in axial alinement with said guide, a pin extending transversely through said socket, a spring interposed between said pin and thereflector, a ring opposed'to said spring and bearing on said pin, and an adjusting member connected to said ring and having guiding engagement in said neck, said adjusting member embracing a threaded shank and a-nut threaded to the shank and engaging on the wall of the-neck.
