To all whom it my concern:
Be it known that l, EARL RAUDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Constantine, county of-St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain .new vand useful Improvements in Spotlights for Automobiles,- of which the following is a,
specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spotlights for automobiles.
The main objects of the invention are: First, to provide an improved spotlight for automobiles which may be. readily turned oh and on and its position be completely controlled from the interior of the car, both in its adjustment on a vertical axis and on a horizontal axis.
Second, to provide an improved manipulating lever for adjusting and manipulatingthe headlight on its vertical axis.
hird, to'i provide such a structure whereby, by the manipulation of a single' 'lever, the headlight may be oscillated on both a vertical and horizontal axis, thereby secur- 1 ing universal control.
Fourth, to provide" such a structure with an improved electric switch means in the lever handle. r
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:

In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing by their numbers, 1 is the lefthand corner post of-an automobile top or top sup- 2 the bracket carrying my improved spotlight. 3 is the clamp therefor for engaging the said post 1, being provided with suitable clamping screws 4c. The bracket 2 is of sheet metal having opposed members 5, 5,see Fig. VT, drawn together by bolt 6 and provided with engaging portions 7 and 8 embracing by frictional engagement the horizontal supporting arm 9 for my improved spotlight. This support is cylindrical in form and constitutes a sleeve support within which the horizontal supporting hollow shank or rock shaft 1d is adjlpsted.
he spotlight 10 is carried by a yoke 11 having vertical pivots 12 and 13 top and bottom. The yoke is fixed upon the end of the hollow rook shaft shank 14:, which is disposed within the sleeve 9 and retained in adjustable position by the coiled spring 15 interposed between it and said sleeve 9. The outer end of shaft 14 and the contactingpart of the yoke are serrated to give a secure adjustment. This rock shaft is adjusted by the arm 16 fixed to the inner end thereof.
A hollow reciprocating adjustable rod 17 is within the hollow rock shaft and is capable of longitudinal adjustment therein. It is provided with an offset portion 18 connectedaby a pivot 19 to the oscillating adjustable plate 20 carried by the spotlight 10. When the rod 17 is adjusted longitudinally the spotlight is oscillated on its vertical axis. This'is accomplished by the manipulation of the actuatin lever 21 rod at 22 link is connected to arm 16 by pivot 25.
The arm 16 comprises side plates that are clamped to the rock shaft by bolt 16, see Figs. I, V and VI.
It will thus be noted that, by manipulating-the lever as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. V, the spotlight will be oscillated on its vertical axis and by manipulating the lever as indicated in Fig. VI, the same will be rocked on its horiontal axis, so that by a combination of the two movements the manipulation and adjustment of the said spotlight is universal within the capacity of the structure.
The spotlight itself may be of any usual construction, but I have shown a special form exceptionally well adapted to this use, in which a ring-like frame 26 is provided with flange 27 to receive the lens 28 and the reflector 29 is flanged at 30 to clamp the periphery of the lens. A removable semispherical gear case 31 is connected by pin and slot joint 32 within the said casing 26 and is held by the clamping spring 33.
The lamp socket 34 is carried by the disk 35 provided with contacts 36 which are connected to the conductors 37 projecting through a lower portion of the said shell at 38 and thence carried through. the bracket and hollow adjusting rod 17, see Fig. V, and connected at-39 to suitable switch means in thelever handle 21. The end 40 of the lever 21 is the, switch button or trolling the current. As the switch is of the usual construction, it is not deemed necesto detail it here.

In a spotlight structure, the combination of a suitable bracket, a horizontal hollow rock shaft carried thereby, a yoke for the said lamp secured to the said rock shaft and provided with pivots transverse. to said laterally projecting key for conrock shaft for supporting said lamp, a laterally projecting arm on said hollow rock shaft, a lon 'tudinal hollow rod in said hollow rock s aft connected to oscillate the posed within the hollow adjusting rod to the said lamp, as specified.
2. In a spotlight structure, the combination of a suitable bracket, a horizontal hol- 'said lamp within the said yoke, a lever conlow rock shaft carried thereby, a yoke for the said lamp secured to the said rock shaft and provided with pivots transverse to said rock. shaft for supporting said lamp, a arm on said hollow rock, shaft, a longitudinal rod in said hollow rock shaft connected to oscillate the said lamp within the said yoke, a lever connected to the said longitudinal rod, a link connection between, the end of said lever and said projecting arm, an electric switch carried by the said arm lever, an electric lamp within the said spotlig t, and electric connections from the switch on said lever to. the said lamp, as specified.
3.In a spotlight structure, the combination of a bracket, a hollow adjustable rock shaft in said bracket, a longitudinal rod within said rock shaft, alateral arm on the said rock shaft comprisingi opposed plates,
a lever disposed between pivotally connected to the said rod, and a link connection for the end of the said lever pivoted between. the said plates.
