Description

PATENT OFFICE.
J'AIVIEISl L. MURPHY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAR;
Specification of Letters Patent. l Patented A110'. 23, 1921.
Application filed March`6, 1919. SerialNo. 280,925.
To all 107mm if' 'may conferir.'
Be it known that I, .latins L. Mulini-IY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chitage, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to the general class of collars, and is particularly adapted to what are termed soft or semi-soft, or negligee collars. This refers more particu]arly to collars which are not stiiiy starched, and in which it is desirable to arrange to support the meeting ends. In such collars 1t has been customary tosew a button upon the outermost face of the neck band at a suitable point, and to button the' projecting end or iiap of the opposite end of the collar thereto, in addition to buttoning the collar, both in the rear and front, to the usual buttons carried on the neck band of the shirt. This method is objectionable by reason of the fact that with the button thus attached, the button is in the way in laundrying the collar and is very often broken, and in addition to that, it interferes with the uniform ironing at that point, whether the laundrying be done by machine or by hand. Yet the convenience of such a button is recognized in this class of collars, and :it is desirable to retain the advantages thereof.
The object of my invention is to retain this desirable feature and obviate the objectionable features mentioned. To this end, it consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar, dotted lines partially showing my improvement;
Fig. 2 is a face view of the end of a collar with the outer part bent upward from the neck band to more clearly illust `ate the construction Fig. 3 is a view from the bottom edge of the end of the collar shown in Fig. 2, showing the opening to the pocket;
Fig. 4f is a section taken substantially on line i-4; of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a view similar' to Fig. 2, showing a slight modification.
In the drawings, 1 represents the neck band of the collar, in which that portion coming in contact with the neck I have termed the innermost face, and that portion shown in Fig. 2, which is outermost from the neck, as the outermost face. 2 is the downturned outer fold of the collar.
The neck band is composed of a' plurality of plies of material. laid one upon the other and stitched to give body to the same. In my improvement, as most clearly shown in Fig. 9., l stitch transversely across the neck band, substantially inclining the same as shown, a.' at BH4, leaving an opening as at 5, as an opening or mouth to the pocket thus formed. In the outermost fold or ply of the material, I form a button hole 6, when by means of the pocket 5, a removable collar button S may be inserted in the pocket with its head passing through the button hole outward, as shown. By directing the stitching 3-4 in a direction to narrow the upper end of the pocket, the material is more firmly supported, and the full strength and support of the material thus stitched together gives the collar button greater rigidity, and prevents its sagging away in use from the innermost portion of the material. The wide mouth 5, is desirable as furnishing ample room in which to place the thumb and fore finger in positioningr the button in the button hole. 7 is the projecting end of the collar at the other end thereof, adapted to be positioned between the band 1 and the downturned outer fold 2, as shown in Fig. 1, and having a button hole 11 formed therein to engage the head of the button S which is inserted in the button hole (i. Both ends of the collar are provided with a button hole 9 to engage the collar button in the front of the neck band of the shirt, while the rear of the collar is provided with the usual button hole 10 for the same purpose.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the construction is the same, with the exception that the lines of stitching 3 and 4 are substantially parallel. The mode of operation is the same, although the form shown in Fig. 2 is preferable, as in the .first place furnishing greater room for the thumb and finger at the opening of the pocket, and greater' firmness and support at the upper inner end of the pocket, as is shown in the form illustrated in Fig. 2. Good results, however, are secured by the form thus illustrated in Fig. 5.
Having thus described` my invention,r it isobvious that variousY immaterial modifications may be made in'the same without departingr from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown kand described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secur by Letters Patent is: Y i
.1. In a collar having the two ends of the neck band'fconstructed to overli'e, and profvided with a button hole in the back and in each of the ends to engage the buttons carried by the shirt band, the neck band of the collar. being formed of two layers of material securedtogetheralong their edges, and having near one end a pocket formed therebetween and yopened atV the bottom edge of istering button hole formed therein.
2. A collar having the two ends of the neck band constructed to overlie, and provided in the back and in each of the ends with button holes to engage the buttons carried by the shirt band, the neck band bei formed of two layers of material securdil together at their edges and having near one end a pocket formed therebetween, said pocket having a wide opening or mouth at one edge of the band, but narrowing at the kinner end of the pocket, with a button hole formed in the outer wall of the pocket near its top, the opposite end of the collar extended to be positioned between the band and the folded over part to overlie the button hole, and having a registering button hole formed therein.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES L. MURPHY.
