BEN F. HARDESTY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SPRING-EQUALIZER ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
Application filed January 24, 1920. Serial No. 353,905.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BEN F. Hannns'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spring: Equalizer Attachments for Automobiles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skllled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of tlns specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front plan view of my improved spring equalizer attachment for automobiles.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a modified form.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of another modified form.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank from which the attachment shown in Flg. 7 is formed; and,
Fig. 9 is a top plan view of another mod1- fied form.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a spring equalizer attachment for automobiles and consists in the formation of the bell-crank lever from pressed or wrought metal forming a part of a spring equalized. disclosed in an appl1cation filed by me of even date herewlth.
The spring equalizer partially shown in Fig. 1 consists of the usual leaf sprlng 1 oi: a well known type of automobile (Ford) which is supported by a shackle 2 pivotally mounted in the upper end of a bell-crank lever 4t fulcrumed on a reversed spring perch 3 mounted in the axle 5 of the machine. 6 is a rod upon which is mounted the shock absorbing means, said rod being duplicated on the opposite side of the machine so that when either front wheel is suddenly lifted, the shock or jar will not be transm tted to the leaf springs 1. The constructlons of the springs for absorbing these shocks or jars are not shown in this appllcation, as they form the subject matter of the co-pending application above referred to.
This invention relates particularly to the construction of the bell-crank lever which is preferably made of one piece "of stamped metal bent at each end upon itself to form a fulcrum and pivotal support for the shackle (at its upper end), the lower end being bent upon itself to form a slot having a semicircular recess at its outer edge to receive a semicircular washer 7 arranged on the rod 6 so that said rod may have a rocking movement relative to said fulcrum In Figs. 1 to l, 4: indicates the body portion of the bell-crank whose upper end is folded upon itself so that it is provided with a jaw a perforated at 4;" to receive the pivot bolt 8 arranged in the upper end of the spring perch, said jaw l being connected to the main body portion of the blank by an inner end connection 4. The lower end of the bell-crank lever is folded or bent upon itself, as at 4:, to form a slotted opening and the edges are recessed at 4: to form a seat for the semicircular washer 7,the folded lower end providing a slot through which the rod 6 passes.
I11 Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a bell-crank lever and blank therefor, respectively, in which the upper end of the blank is formed with a projection or leg 9 designed to fit in and be riveted or upset in an opening 9*, the lower end of the blank being folded upon itself as described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4:.
In Figs. 7 and 8, the blank is formed so that there is a bridge wall 10 extending over the top of the shackle and connecting the two side walls of the bell-crank lever, the lower end being folded upon itself to form the slotted edge recessed opening before described.
In Fig. 9, the blank is formed so that there is a bottom bridge wall 11 connecting the two vertical walls of the upper end of the bell. crank lever, the lower end of said bellcrank lever being folded upon itself to form a recessed slotted seat for the semispherical head of the rod 6 as before described.
I claim:
,1. A spring equalizer attachment for automobiles in the form of a bell crank lever consisting of an arm folded upon itself and recessed at its edges to form a slotted opening through which an equalizer rod may pass, the other arm of said bell crank lever having its outer end formed to provide-sepaspring shackle, the opposite end of said rated'jaws for the attachment of the spring blank being recessed at its edges and bent shackle. upon itself to form a slotted opening 10 2. A spring equalizer attachment for autothrough which an equalizer rod may pass. 5 mobiles comprising a blank bent upon itself In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my and provided with perforations to form a signature this 20th day of January 1920. fulcrum, and means of attachment for the BEN F. HAR-DESTY.
