BRILL COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIAyA CORPORATION OF PENN- 1 SYLVANIA.
can TRUCK,
Original applicationfiled December 22,1922, Serial No. 608,420. Divided and this application filed February 17, 1923.
To all whom it may concern: I,
Be it known that I, VALTER S. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia and 6 State of Pennsylvania, have invented a cer" tain new and useful Improvement in Car Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of my oopending application for patent, Serial No.
608,420, filed December 22nd, 1922.
This invention relates to an improvement in car trucks, and has for its object to provide a novel form of spring-supporting 16 means which will avoid jerky and unpleasant lateral movements or side sway of the car body; and which will remove the twisting strains usually imposed upon the leaf springs of the truck during the jerky lateral movements of the car body on rough stretches of track.
A further object of my invention is to provide a spring-supporting means which will hold the sprin securely and prevent 2 distortion thereof at all times.
with these objects in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car truck, showing my improved spring suspending means, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Throughout the various views of the drawing, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the embodiment of my invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, the upper member of the truck side frame 4 is disclosed at 1, and the lower member of said frame is indicated at 2. The
truck bolster is indicated at 3 and it is,
Serial No. 619,556. r,
The ends of the leaf spring 7 are each supported upon a bracket orsp'ring-seat 8, and each of said brackets is provided with a pair of upwardly extending ears 9 between which the lower end of a curved link or hanger 10 is pivoted by means of the bolt 11. The link or hanger 10 extends upwardly behind the frame member 1 and has its upper end bent or curved forwardly to extend over the top of the frame member 1.
At 12 is shown the hanger-supporting bracket which is provided with a pair of spaced lugs 13 which straddle the frame member 1 and are secured thereto by a bolt 14, which extends through the lugs 13 and through the frame member.
The bracket 12 is provided with a pair of spaced upwardly extending ears 15, between which the upper end of the hanger 1O is pivoted on the bolt 16. The ends of the spring are supported by the hangers 10 as described above, and as such hangers are pivoted at their upper and lower ends it will be apparent that during side sway of the bolster, the spring 7 will ride horizontally, and the twisting stresses usually imparted to a fixed spring, will be avoided.
The use of curved or bent spring-supporting hangers permits the spring to be supported directly below the side frame member 1, or even outside of the same, without requiring the use of a frame member of substantialthickness which would have to be perforated to permit a straight hanger to extend directly downward through it.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that my invention is not to be restricted to the exact embodiment shown, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a car truck, a truck frame, a bracket secured thereon, a link having one of its ends pivoted in said bracket and extending downwardly on one side only of said frame, and a spring seat pivotally secured to the lower end of said link.
2, In a car truck, a truck frame, a bracket secured to the upper member of the frame and projecting upwardly above the same, a link having its upper end pivotally secured in said bracket, said link being bent to extend to one side of the frame member and projecting downwardly below the same, and a pivoted spring-seat on the lower end of said link.
3; In a car truck, a truck frame, a bracket secured to said frame, said bracket being provided with a pair of ears, a link having one of its ends pivoted between said ears, said link being bent to extend from said bracket behind the frame and below the upper member of said frame, a spring seat pivotally supported on the lower end of said link, and a leaf spring having one of its ends supported on said seat.
4. Ina car truck, a truck frame having an upper member, a pair of spaced brackets secured thereon, a link pivoted in each of said brackets, each of said links extending to one side of the frame member and projecting downwardly below the same, a spring seat pivotally secured to the lower end of each of thelinks, and a leaf spring having its ends supported upon said seats.
Signed at the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, this 15th day of February, 1923. 1
WALTER S. ADAMS.
