To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatV I, BUEL H. CANADY, a
vcitizen of the United States, residing at lVinslow, in the county of Navajo and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Bearing-Plates, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to journal boxes for railway locomotives, trucks, trailers or the like, and has particular reference to improvements in removable bearing lateral plates, disclosed in my co-pending application for removable bearing plates filed J anuary 15, 1920, Serial No. 351,681.
An important object of the invention is to provide laterally extending lugs carried by the removable bearing plate and box, which lugs are so constructed and shaped that their inclined contacting faces have the maximum area, and accordingly increased strength in supporting the bearing plate and holding it against. lateral displacement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the journal box or driving box embodies a box or body portion 5, including an upper arch 6 and legs 7 The box 5 is provided at its ends with flanges 8. This box may be of any well known or preferred type, and is arranged in the usual manner on the pedestal of the truck frame, or the like. The numeral 9 designates an arch bearing, formed of bearing metal, such as brass or Babbitt metal. The arch bearing is held within the arch 6 in the usual manner.
The numeral 10 designates a vertically removable end bearing plate, which is adapted to be arranged in contacting relation with the fiange 8. This end bearing plate has its outer side provided with a bearing strip 11, which may be formed of brass, Babbitt metal, or any other suitable material. The bearing strip 11 may be secured to the plate 10 1n any suitable manner, as by means of a dove-tail joint 12, or by any other suitable means.
The ange S adjacent to the vertically removable end bearing plate carries a pair of laterally or horizontally outstanding lugs 13, rigidly secured thereto, and these lugs have their upper faces 14 beveled or inclined downwardly toward their inner ends, with the points 15 at their outer ends projecting outwardly beyond the flange 8, for substantial distances. ln other words, the lugs 13 have a substantially greater width than the flange 8, with their inner ends flush with the inner side of the flange, and their outer ends projecting forwardly or outwardly beyond the outer face of the flange 8, for a substantial distance. This construction increases the length of the inclinedl contact faces 14. Upper coacting laterally or horizontally outstanding lugs 16 are rigidly secured to the vertical edges of the end bearing plate 10, and extend laterally and inwardly beyond the same, for a substantial distance, with their outer ends flush with the outer face of the bearing plate. The upper lugs 16 have lower inclined contact faces 17, extending from the forward end to the rear end thereof. and these inclined faces extend downwardly toward the inner portion of the box. The inclined faces 1T are adapted to engage the inclined faces 14, and these faces are of the same length.
The lugs 13 and 16 are provided with vertical openings 20, slightly larger in diameter than bolts 21, pass therethrough, whereby these bolts may be readily withdrawn, and the upper lugs may partake of restricted or limited lateral movements with relation to the lower lugs. The lower ends of the bolts 21 are screw-threaded, to engagev nuts 22, and a cotter pin 23 is preferably passed'through an opening in the lower end of each bolt.
The numeral 24 designates a wheel, having a hub 25, slidably engaging the strip 11.
The removable end bearing plate 10 is provided in its top with an opening 26, for receiving a lubricant. This opening leads into a transverse opening 27, to supply the lubricant to the face of the strip 11. I also contemplate applying the thickness of the In use, when the'istrip 1l becomes worn,
the nuts Q2 may be removed from the bolts 21, and the end bearingplate 10 raised vertically, and separated from the box 6. Another end bearing plate may be substituted in its place or the old one rebabbitted or rebrassed.
I also contemplate applying my invention to the ordinary box or wheel face bearing now in use, in which event the outer end of the box or wheel face should be faced off for one-half to one and one-half an inch to provide a space for the bearing plate. The lugs 13 may be suitably securedY to the flange 8 of the box, by welding or the like.
It is tobeunderstood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the saine, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope ofthe subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a-journal box having van outer flange, of laterally extending lugs carried by the flange and extending longitudinally beyond the outer face of the flange for a substantial distance, said lugs having inclined upper faces yand substantially vertical openings, a vertically movable bearing plate to engage theflange, laterally extending lugs carried by the bearing plate and extending longitudinally inwardly beyond the inner face of the bearing plate for a substantial dis-tance, the second named lugs having lower, inclined faces extending from their vouter ends to their inner ends and adapted to engage with the first named inclined faces, said second named lugs having substantially vertical openings, and bolts passing through the openings. of the first and second named lugs.
2. The combination with a journal box having a flange near one end, of laterally extending lugs secured to the flange and extending longitudinally beyond one face of tically movable bearing plate to engage thev flange, laterallyextending lugs carried by the bearing plate and extending longitudinally beyond one face of the bearing plate for a substantial distance, said second named lugs having lower inclined contact faces extending lthroughout substantially the entire length of the lugs and adapted to engage the first named inclined faces, the second named lugs having -substantial vertical openings, and boltsV passing through the openings of the first and second named lugs.
3. The combination with a journal box, of laterally extending lugs secured thereto near one end thereof, and having upper inclined contact faces extending throughout substantially the entire length of the lugs, a vertically movable bearing plate to be arranged .adjacent to the end of the journal box, laterally extending lugs carried by the plate and extending longitudinally beyond one side of the plate for a substantial distance, the second named vlugs having lower inclined contact faces extending throughout substantially the entire length of the same and adapted to engage the first named inclined faces, and means to draw the sets of lugs toward each other.
4. The combination with the journal box, of laterally extending lugs secured thereto near one endthereof, and having upper inclined contract faces extending throughout substantiallythe entire length of the lugs, said lugs having openings formed therein, a vertically movable bearing plate to` be arranged vadjacent lone end of the box, lateral extending lugs carried by the bearing plate and extending longitudinally beyond one face thereof for a substantial distance, the second named lugs having lower inclined contact faces extending from their outer ends to their inner ends and adapted to engage the first named inclined faces, the second named lugs having openings lformed therein, and bolts engaging 'in said openings.
