Be it known that I, BUEL H. CANADY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at `lvinslow, in the county of Navajo and State of Arizona,rhave invented certain newand useful Improvements 1n Removable Bearing-Plates, of which the following is a specicharacterfwhereby the removable end bearing plate may be separated from the box, without" dropping the wheels or removing the box.
A further object of the invention is to provide meansA for connecting the removable bearing plate with the end `ofthe box, in a manner to firmly clamp these parts together, and to permit of a verticalmovement of th Y bearing plate, upon its removal. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable. L
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawlngs, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the driving-box embodies a boxpor body portion 5, including an upperarch Giand legs 7. lThe Vbox 5 is provided atV its ends with the usual flanges 8. This box may be of any well known or preferred type, and is arranged in the usual Specification of Letters Patent.

manner `on the ypedestal of the truck frame, or the like. The numeral 9 designates an arch bearing, formed of bearing metal, such as brass or Babbitt metal. The archL bearing is held within the arch 6 in the usual manner.
The numeral 10 designates a vertically removableend bearing plate, which. is
adapted to be arranged in contacting relation with the. outer flange 8. This end bearing plate has its outer side provided withV a bearing strip 11, which may be formed of brass, Babbitt metal, or other suitable material. The bearing strip 11 may be secured to the plate 10 in any suitable manner, as by means of a dove-tail joint 12, or by any other suitable means.
The outer flange 8 carries a pair of horizontally outstanding lugs 13, rigidly secured thereto, and these lugs have theirupper faces 14 beveled or inclined downwardly tov ward the inner side, with the point l5 cuthorizontally, as shown.VV Upper coacting horizontally outstanding lugs 16 are rigidly secured to the bearing plate 10, at its vertical edges, and extend laterally and inwardly beyondthe same; These lugs have notches 17, providing vertical and inclined or bevelcd walls 18 and 19. The notches 17 receive the lugs 13, and the inclined walls 19 engage and coact with the inclined walls 14,
whereby thel plate 10 y will be drawn in wardly, when drawn downwardly.
The lugs 13 and 16 are provided with vertical openings 20, slightly larger in diameter than bolts 21, passed therethrough, whereby these bolts may be readily withdrawn, and
the upper lugs may partake of limitedv latf eral movements withrelation to thev lower lugs. The lowerV ends of the bolts 21 are screw-threaded, to engage nuts 22, and a cotter pin 23 is preferably passed through an opening in the lower end of the bolt.
The numeral 24 designates the wheel.v havinga hubv25, slidably engaging the strip 11.
The removable end bearing plate is provided in its top with an opening 26, for receiving a lubricant. This opening leads into a transverse opening 27, communicating with grooves 28, in the face of the bearing strip 11.
In use, when the strip 11- becomes worn,
the nuts 22 may be removed from the boltsA other end bearing plate may be substitutedy n its place.
I also contemplate applying my invention to the ordinary box, now in use, in which event the one end of the box or wheel face bearing should be faced off for one-half to three-fourths of an inch, to provide a space for the bearing plate l0. The lugs 13 may be suitably secured to the flange of the box, as
by welding or the like.
It is to be understood that the form of my A invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, andv ar angement of parts may be Vresorted Vto without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims. ' horizontally outstanding lugs secured thereto upon its opposite sides, said lugs having corresponding ends inclined and provided `with longitudinal openings, a bearingplate Vto engage the end of the journal box to be separated therefrom by a vertical movement with relation thereto, horizontally outstanding lugs carried by the bearing plate at the opposite ends thereof, the second named lugs having inclined faces at corresponding ends to engage the first named inclined faces and having` longitudinal openings, and bolts extending'through the longitudinal openings.
4:. The combination with a journal box provided at one -end with asubstantially horizontally arranged lug, said lug being provided at its top vwith an inclined face extending longitudinally of the journal box and inclined downwardly toward the inner portion of the journal box, a removable bearing plate adapted for arrangement ad- ,jacent the end of the journal box and to be separated therefrom by a vertical movement,
said bearing plate having a substantiallyV horizontally arranged lug provided upon its lower end with an incline-d face extending downwardly toward the inner portion of the journal box, the last named face being adapted to engage the first named inclined face, and means to draw the bearing plate downwardly withrelation to the journal box.
