Be it known that I, Ono H. ELLER, a citizen of the United 'States, residing in the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Flying Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such aS will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part ofthisspecification.

The present invention relates to improvements in flying toys; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of exceedingly simple, eflicie'nt and inexpensive construction, Which in addition to being used as a flying toy may be used as a spinning top.

My present invention therefore consists in the novel construction of a flying toy and top embodying the principles herein above mentioned, and. of a, character to be more fully described in the specification. Thls invention consists furthermore in the several novel arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of construction of the same, all of which will be herein set forth and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to this specification.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.

In the drawings, 1 represents a barrel provided with a longitudinally arranged bore for the reception of the spirally wound spring 2 one end of which is secured in any desired or convenient manner to the lower end of the barrel as at 3 and the upper or free end of the spring is provided with a vertical ofl'set at which extends slightly above the upper end of the barrel 1.

To project the device and cause the propeller to fly the operator simply pushes up sllghtly with his thumb or finger on the free end of the rod 9, in the direction indlcated by the arrow, Fig. 1, which projects through the lower end of the barrel, thus causing the pin 8 to clear the teeth 7-7 and the rip-turned end 4 of the spring 2, thus causing the spring to give a quick impulse to the rod 9, with its attached head and propeller and rapidly to rotate it, thereby releasing the propeller from the pins 12 permitting the same to grip the air and rise.

,When the toy is intended to be used as a top, instead of a flying toy, the propeller is discarded and the conical head 15 is substituted therefor. The conical head is provided on its under side with apertures designed to receive the pins l212 of the head 10, and is further provided with a stem 16 designed to fit into the aperture 17 of the head 10. In this manner the conical head 15 is removably'secured upon the head 10.
