PATENT WILLIAM GOEIZ, OF NOBOTON HEIGHTS, CONNECTICUT.
TOY.
, Application filed April 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM (loan, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Noroton Heights, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to that type of toy known as spinning tops, and has as its object to provide a top having a handle by which it can be conveniently manipulated prior to its release.
A further object is in the provision of a resilient point causing a peculiar bounding movement of the top when discharged from its holder.
Another purpose is to provide means for engaging the operating cord in a quick and effective manner.
curve These objects are secured by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of an embodiment of the top as engaged in its holder- Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3. is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 14 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a solid spherical knob constituting the upper element of the top, the same having a fiat, beaded base portion 11 from which extends a conical stem 12, presenting a surface on which is wound the cord 13.
A recess 14 is formed in the periphery of the stem 12, midway in its length and leadin from the recess is a narrow slot 15 to blend at its .end with the stem, as shown best in Figure 3.
Said recess is adapted to receive a knot or the like at the end of, the cord 13. acting to hold the cord in engagement while it is being wound but becomes released as the cord is pulled from the stem.
The lower end of the stem is provided with a metal ferrule 16 and contains an axial recess 17 in which is slidably mount ed a plunger 18 having a rounded outer end and a bar 19 extending into the stem.
Said plunger is held normally outward to enter one of the passages 1922. Serial No. 548,577.
by a coiled compression spring 20 in the recess and a pin 21 passes transversely through the bar 19, the ends of the pin moving in an elon ated slot 22 which limits the movement of t e plunger 18 as well as preventsit from leaving the recess 17.
A handle having opposed ends 23 of any I convenient length and proportioned to be easily held, has a central enlarged portion 24 containing a through opening 25 adapted to receive the stem 12 together with the cord wound upon it..
Extending transversely through the sides of the enlargement 24, in register with the axis of the opening 25, are circular holes 26 from which extend diagonal passages 27 leading to the upper passages being arranged in opposed relation.
In operation, the knot or terminal of the cord is engaged in the recess 14, passed through the slot 15 and then maneuvered 27, finally seatin the cord in the hole 26.
he top is then entered, stem downward thru the openin 25 and by grasping the knob the top W51 cord on its periphery.
Thereupon a sharp pull on the free end of the cord will cause the top to of the opening, 27 become free on any convenient surface, presenting the spring pressed plunger point downward, cushioning the fall of the top, at that time rapidly rotating and causing it to hop in a manner not possible with ordinary spinning tops.
Obviously the momentum gained by the head 10 will cause the top to continue to rotate a considerable period of time.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by ters Patent, is v A spinning top comprising a spherical knob, a conical stem depending therefrom, a ferrule secured about the lower portion of said stem, a tip pin slidable axially in said stem said pin aving a reduced portion, reaching into the body of said stem, a spring encircling the reduced portion normally projecting the pin outwardly of the stem, means for limiting the relative movement of said pin and stem, and means for spinning the top. y p
In witness whereof I aflix my signature. 1 WILLIAM GOETZ.
