Application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. RmnnLL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Buffalo, county of Erie,State of New ork, have invented a certain new and useful 1mprovement in Combination Sewing-Machines and Tables, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it pertains to make. and use the same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to produce a supporting structure for a sewingmachine head which will possess all of the advantages of the old style-sewing machinebut which, when the machineis not in use, will have the appearance and may be put to use of an ordinary table; thus making it possible for one to have a sewing machine which shall be solidly supported and permit the operator to sew conveniently and with comfort, without making it necessary that space be taken up by a mere sewing machine.
The various features. of rioveltywhereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter he pointed out withparticularity in the claim; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its obj ects and ad vantages, reference: may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein: k a e Figure 1 isa perspective view of acombined sewing machine and E table arranged in accordance with a preferred form of my invention, adjustedso as to havethe appearance of a mere table;
eference being had to the drawings, 1 represents a table of any usual or desired size, shape and style. The table is provided with a double top comprising a fixed under member, 2, and a wholly removable upper Specification of Letters Fatent.
I ira neenumer cal 1918. Serial N0. 22ae7o= i i 1 member, 3. The sewing. machine 5 head, 4:, 1s mounted on the stationaryrtop member. in any usual or suitable 'waywhich-gpermits it to be swung downout of theway when not inuse. In the, arrangementshown, the stagtionary top membe'rof the. table is 4 provided with an opening, 5, which isjpartly-closed at one side by ahinged flap,6; the sewing machine head being hung. so that, by lifting the flap 6, the head may be. swung upabove the table top and, upon lowering theiflap the inner edge thereof supports one side of the sewing machine head in a well/known way. An: electric motor, '7, is attached to the headso as tobemovable therewith. The table isprovided with a skirt-likepart, 8, commonly found in most tables, extending downwardly from'ithelunder side of the table top far enough to conceal the housing or chamber into which thesewing machine as r head is adapted to bejstored A lrheostat,'9,
or other controller for the electric. motor; is housed underneath. the tabletop in position to be concealed by the part ,8."o f,theg table.
.member 9 and the-arm-lO are connected togather by a suitable :fiexible connection, 12.
Aspring, l3,telldsto hold the armlll jin the 1 position in which. the ,current will vbe shut ofi or thefmotoribe otherwise stopped. I, The
a lower end of gthe arm 10is preferably fiat.
.tened so, astoQpresent. abroad suria engaged by the kneeof theoperator who, by simply exerting a slight pressure of the knee in the sidewise direction, can shift the controller against the tension of the spring in a manner to start and stop the motor and cause it to turn at any desired speed. A catch, 14, is placed on the under side of the table in position to engage with the govern ing arm 10 when the latter is swung up high enough to be concealed behind the part 8 of the table, and so leave nothing projecting below the part 8 when the sewing machine is not in use. The table is provided with two compartments or chambers, 15 and 16, opener be ing out through the stationar topmember and provided with covers, 1 and 18, re-
spectively; these covers having their'up'per. surfaces flush with the plane of the station ary top. The compartments are shallower than the depth of the part 8 so that they are completely concealed by the latter. The
compartment, 15, may be employed to hold the usual sewing machine parts While the compartment 16 may serve to hold the connecting cord, 19, thrOugh which current is su lied to'the' machine. e hen the m'achine is being used the parts are in thecOndition shown in Fig.5and the operator has a solidly supported sewingmachine provided with'a work-supportin'gsurface of'large area, so that the operatorm'ay do hisor herwork with the same case; and convenience, "and with even o "a' greater degree of comfort, as though the machine were designedsolely to serve as a practices.
. "down out of-the, way, the governing arm,
'10,- is swung up, and then the detachable top fixed in position with the result that the sewing machine is transformed into *a piece o fi furniture which has the'appearance and of having atable any desired style and of; any desiredsize of ameretable and can'be used in exactly the sameway as though it possessed no other functions. than that of a table. Except for the necessity of having a skirt-like 7 part, 7 8,
argeenough for convenient sew1ng, lthe mounting offtheseW- ing machine "on the table does not place an permits it 'to beconst'ructed accordingfto and shape.
i If the table is to resemble an ordinary table in .every respect, i it *is necessarythat the detachable top be held in lace in such a manner that "it',will"make a'tight joint j and will not have 'the appearance, of aloose P160 hm y Warp out of shape; I av against the latter. I accomblishthisby securing studs, 20, on theundenside of the detachable top, there being iirthe'case of a square or rectangular table at least'four of these studs placedone, adjacent to each corner. Each stud: is adapted to extend down through and fit in a hole, 21, in the stationairy top. All annular groove, 22, is out in Teach ofthestudsinithe vicinity of its lower end. On the under side of the stationary table top, in the vicinity of-each of the studs, is a sli ding dog,*23, notchediat oneiend'. as indicated'at 24:, to straddle the grooved portion of the corresponding stud; and made wedge-shaped so: that when it .is "pushed lat; erally to embrace thestuditexerts-a down.-

The fastening means just describednotonly holds the detachable top tightlyvin 'place' 5 butit-is not affected by any warping of the detachable top because theii l tter 7 can always be premeddown flat until-each Ioneof-the notched studs; is engaged by the: cooperatin dog.
Vhile I with particularity only a single :preferred form: of my inventionx1 do not desire to be limited to -the exact structural details thus illustrated e'andidescribed; *but" intend to I cover all formsand-arrangements which come within the terms employed in the definitions' of my invention constituting the. ap pended claimr :1; c; a
