RICHARD MUNDLOS, 0F MAGDEBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM OF H.
MUNDLOS & 00., OF MAGDEBURG,
GERMANY.
Application filed October 6, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD MUNDLos, a subject of the King of Prussia, and residing at Magdeburg-N, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Frames, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates to sewing machines of the kind in which the frame is provided with a trough-like box into which the head can be lowered, and my invention has for its object to improve the construction of such machines so that the operator is enabled to assume a straight and convenient position. To this end I so arrange and locate the head relative to the table that the reciprocating needle moves approximately above the middle of the treadle, while the head and the trough-like box therefor project over or beyond the lateral upright of the frame carrying the fly-wheel, the upper portion of said upright being extended so as to afford the necessary space for the projecting location of the trough-like box. This arrangement permits of the fly-wheel being arranged outside the frame, the wheel thus not interfering with the work of the operator.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 an end view of the machine, the lower part being shown broken off in Fig. 2.
(Z designates the table carrying in the usual way the head 5, adapted to be lowered into the trough-like box a. The base-plate b on which the head a is mounted is hinged or pivoted to the table d, so that the head 6 can be let down into the box a. The head 6 is arranged on table (Z so as to Specification of Letters Patent.

project beyond the upright c of the frame. Due to this arrangement the needle will reciprocate in a plane approximately in line with the center of the treadle f so that the operator can assume a straight and convenient position. The box a also projects beyond the upright c the upper portions 0 and c of which are spread in such a manner that the box amay be accommodated between them, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said portions 0 and 0 can be carried around the outer wall of the box a and fixed in the usual manner to the underside of the table a? near its longer edges. This arrangement whereby the head 6 is located to one side of the table cl, so that it projects to some extent beyond one of the uprights, enables also the flywheel 6 to be arranged outside the frame and the table (Z itself need not be increased in size. Consequently widening of the frame is unnecessary and suihcient space is left free between the frame uprights to accommodate the operator.
I claim as my invention:
A sewing machine comprising a standard consisting of two uprights, one upright being spread at the top so as to form an open space, a table carried by said standard, a trough-shaped box supported below said table entirely within the spread portion of said upright, and a head mounted on said table and adapted to be lowered into said box, both said box and said head extending beyond the said upright.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD MUNDLOS.
