Description
A. T. WALL.
SAFETY CATCH APPLICATION men MAR. 91. 1921.
1,384,983 Patented July 19, 1921.
INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY 'l' FM 1.
ASHBEL T. WALL, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SAFETY-CATCH.
Application filed March 9, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AsHBEL T. WALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Catches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety catches for pins, brooches and other articles'of a similar character.
The essential objects of my inventlon are to insure an effective locking of the operating lever; to afford a facile operatlon of the parts; and to attain these ends in a structure adapted for inexpensive manufacture.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings whlch form a part of this invention,
Figures 1 and 2 are a front elevation and a side elevation respectively of my catch,
Fig. 3, a plan view of the same omitting the lever and pintle, and
Fig. 4, a partial section of the complete catch on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In its present form of embodlment my device is cut and bent from a sheet of metal and comprises a base 5 integral with whose rear end is a catch or hook comprislng a body or shank 7 and beak or hook extremity 8. Integral with the body or shank 7 are lateral forwardly directed parallel ears or side walls 10 provided with perforations 11 in which is mounted a pintle 12 passing through the lower end of a straight locln'ng lever 13 having upon its free end a rounded head 14. The beak 8 has its terminal end provided with a rearwardly or inwardly directed channel or slot 16 communicating with an enlarged circular hole or opening 17 at its rear end in an intermediate portlon of the beak. The channel forms resultant forwardly directed fingers 19. The hole 17 creates neck portions 20 at the bases of the fingers 19 rendering the latter laterally resilient. The width of the channel 16 is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1921. Serial No. 450,992.
slightly less than the diameter of the lever 13, while the diameter of the opening 17 exceeds the diameter of the lever, and affords a seat for the head 14.
My safety catch is adapted formounting upon the body of a brooch in the usual manner near the end opposite the pin tongue, the latter being adapted to normally lie beneath the beak 8 as usual. To admit the pin tongue to the catch the arm head 14: is grasped and the arm 13 is swung out of engagement with the beak. After the pin tongue has been introduced into the catch the lever 13 is pushed toward the beak and traverses the slot 16. While effecting this passage the fingers 19 laterally yield to some such position as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3. When the lever reaches the hole or enlargement 17 the fingers snap back to original position and the head rests in the hole 19. The lever is locked against accidental escape through the slot 16.
I claim:
1. In a safety catch of the character described, a base, a shank, a beak on the shank comprising necks and laterally yielding fingers upon the necks, ears supported by the base, a lever pivotally supported in the ears of greater diameter than the space between the ears, and a head on the lever adapted toregister in the space between the necks.
2. In a safety catch of the character described, a base, a shank, parallel forwardly directed ears integral with the shank, a pintle in the cars, a straight lever on the pintle, a head on the free end of the lever, and a beak on the shank provided with an "inwardly directed terminal slot adapted to guide the lever and with a hole at the inner end of the slot.
8. In a safety catch of the character described, a base, lateral ears on the base, a shank on the base intermediate the cars, a pintle in the ears disposed parallel with the shank, a lever on the pintle, a head on the lever, a beak on the shank provided with a hole and with a slot extending from its lateral extremity to the hole.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
ASHBEL T. WALL.
