flitorne g' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. H
HUGO SCHICK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION BACKING AND POST FOR ARTIFICIAL ANTERIOR TEETH.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known-that I, Hooo Sonron, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Combination Backings and Posts for Artificial Anterior Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination backing and post for artificial anterior teeth crowns, and has for its object to provide a combined backing and post for use in connection with what is known as Steels facings, the use of which backing and post. will permit a dentist to do all fitting in a patients mouth and thereby facilitate manipulations in the making of all styles of Richmond crowns, as no impressions and bite are neces sary as required with the present type of backing.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the improvements which I will now describe in the following specification and finally point out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1, is an enlarged side elevation of a crown made with my improved combination backing and post.
fFig. 2, is a partly sectional elevation there- 0 Fig. 3, is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 4:, is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 5, is an enlarged side elevation of the combination backing and post.
Fig. 6, is a plan view of the blank for forming the inlay and post for the backing.
Fig. 7, is a side elevation of the inlay and post after it has been formed and prior to being fixed to the backing.
Fig. 8, is a horizontal section taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 9, is a top plan view of the combination backing and post.
Fig. 10, is a front elevation of the combination backing and post.
Fig. 11, is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 12,- is a perspective view of a facing.
Referring to the drawings the reference character 1 designates a natural tooth root which is provided with a suitable cap 2. 3 represents an artificial tooth facing. The facing 3 is provided with a suitably shaped Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 28 192j Application filed Jul 21,
1919. Serial No. 312,192.
The backing is designated 8 and consists of a suitable metallic plate provided with a suit able opening 9.
The inlay consists of a preferably tubular head, or body 10, a neck, or fin l1 integral with the head or body 10, and stud 12 integral with the neck or fin 11. The stud 12' is adapted to engage in the opening 9 of the backing 8 and is securely fixed thereto by riveting the same for securely holding the inlay in position.
The root-post consists of a suitable shaped extension 13 of the neck or fin 11, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7 The root-post is preferably tapered, and when formed will be substantially flat, as shown in Fi 9, or it may be expanded to form a hollow cone shaped post, as is manifest.
In forming the device from the blank shown in Fig. 6, it is necessary to bend portion 10 of the blank into the tubular head .or body 10, of the inlay and cause the side portions 11 of the blank to engage one another to form the neck or fin 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In bringing the side portions 11 of the blank together, the cars 12 thereof, are at the same time brought together to form the stud 12. The post blank 13 being integral with one of the side portions llis also bent back upon itself and forms the root-post simultaneously with the forming of the neck, or fin 11 and the stud 12. The lower edge 14 of the root-post 13, may, if desired, be soldered. as at 15, or otherwise secured to the backing 8 to add rigidity to the tooth-post 13.
The inlay only extends downward a short distance below the upper edge of the backing 8 and extends upwardly therefrom any suitable distance in the form of a rootpost 13.
The tubular head, or body 11 of the inlay is adapted to engage in the socket a of the facing 3 from the cervix toward the biting edge of the facing 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the neck, or fin 11 engages in the channel 6 of the facing 3, as shown in Fig. 8.
'froin the mouth, soldered and polished and the facing is then cemented in position upon the inlay.
The many advantages of the herein described combination backing and post will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertai ns.
'What I claim is:
l. A combined backing and post for artificial anterior teeth, comprising a backingplate an inlay fixed to the face of said bacle ing-plate and a root-post extending upwardly from said backing-plate.
2. A combined backing andpost for artificial anterior teeth, comprising a backingplate, an inlay fixed to the face of the backing-plate and extending below the upper edge of the plate a suitable distance, and a root-post integral with the inlay. r
3. A combined backing and post for artificial interior teeth, comprising a backingplateia'n inlay fixed to the face of the backing-plate and extending below the upper edge of the plate a suitable distance, means uniting the tubular head of the inlay with the backing-plate, and a root-post integral with the inlay. a
4C. A combined backing and post for artificial anterior teeth, comprisinga backingplate a laterally projectingginlay fixed to said plate, and a root-post integral with the inlay extending upwardly from the upper edge thereof.
5. An artificial tooth, comprising a porcelain facing having a recessed socket-extending from the cervix toward the biting edge thereof, a backing-plate, an inlay fixed to the facing engaging in the recessed socket, and a root-post integral with the inlay extending upwardly above the upper edge of the backing-plate. V v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to the specification.
