Description

L. B. PERT.
Revolving Book-Cases.
Patented April2'9.1873.
AM, P11070 LITHOGRAP/l/c co. 1w j OmpR/Ek PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER B. PERT, OF TEGUMSEH, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING BOOK-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,279, dated April 29, 1873; application filed January 21, 1873. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER B. PERT, of
Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Revolving Book Case, Closet, Drawers, and Book-Rest; and I do declare that the following is la tiue and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the central spindle. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the larger book-closet at x in Fig. 1, showing a half-opened door in dotted outline. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the upper part of a sliding door, and Fig. 5, a plan of the bookrest with its cover removed.
Like letters refer to like part-s in the several gures.
This invention has for its object to provide a series of book racks or cases, a pair of drawers, and four book-rests in a very compact compass, all revolving on a central spindle, mounted on a movable platform, the whole being arranged as a reference library of easy access to the professional man, near whose desk it is designed to stand. The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the device and the arrangement of its several parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a platform, which is mounted on casters and supports a central wooden shaft or spindle, B. On this spindle revolves a shallow square case, C, having two drawers, C', on opposite sides for the reception of blanks, &c. Above the top of the case C the diameter of the spindle is reduced, leaving a shoulder, a, on which rests the bottom of a closet, D, up through the center of which the spindle extends, the closet revolving freely thereon. The closet is divided by a shelf into an upper and lower part, and is open at opposite sides for the insertion of books at such opposite sides. The open sides may be closed bya door, D', to each, in the following manner: In the top and bottom plates of the cover, near the edges thereof, is
cut a groove, e, extending from the middle to the right-hand corner and halfway around the right side of the closet. A slidedoor, D', has a stud, f, Figs. 3 and 4., projecting from the top and and bottom edges, at the center of its width, into these grooves. The door being closed, to open it slide it to the right until stopped by the corners of the grooves, and then, turning it axially, slide it back along the side of the closet. of the door closes the closet. E is a square frame journaled on the spindle, resting on the ledge b of the latter, formed by reducing the diameter of said spindle. In each side of this frame slides a book-rest, E, composed of longitudinal bars connected at the outer end to a cross-bar or draw-front, the longitudinal bars passing between those of the rest at the opposite side of the frame. On these rests books of reference may be laid while in use'. F is a book case or closet of smaller size than the closet D, being in like manner pivoted lon the spindle, resting on a shoulder, c, of said spindle. G is a still smaller book-case, pivoted on the spindle above the closet F, resting on the shoulder d of said spindle. Either or both of these book-cases may be provided with the sliding doors D, if desired.
The device takes up but little room along side the table of the professional man. Every part being of easy access makes it very convenient to reach and consult any work of refA erence without moving from his seat.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isHm 1. The construction and arrangement of the platform A, spindle B, case C, drawers C C', closet D, book-supporting frames E E', and one or more book-cases, F G, all revolving on said spindle, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In combination with the case, constructed as described, the doors D provided with studs f f sliding in the .grooves e c, substantially asshown and described.
LUTHER B. PERT.
