LEON H. WHEELER, OE ELLENSBURG, WASHINGTON; c. EWHEELER, ADMINISTRA- TOR OF SAID LEON H. WHEELER, DECEASED, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MFSNE ASSIGNMENTS, 0E ONE-THIRD 'ro RAY MQOOY, 0E NEWYOEH, N. Y., AND ONE- THIED To JOSEPH E. OBRIEN, or WEST NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY.
LApplication filed July 30,
In foot pumps it is desirable to have a toggle-lever device which is'as light, small and compact as is possible-consistently with rigidity, durability, eflioien'cy and ease of operation vand it is also desirable to have-the toggle-'levers through'which the application of power is applied to the pistonv to approach as close to the ground as possibleg-and with these ends in viewy I have eliminated the du-v plicate or twin lever parts heretofore usually employed, consolidating suoli twin"parts into one and producing a foot pump of relatively few strong, rigid and durable parts, in which*I the vertical power-producing movement ofthe foot is centrally and .withv out cramping communicated 'to the piston by a vertically-movable treadle lever and a VlinkY Vleverwhich Vforms a toggle jointv therewith,
and `'these levers with the piston to which they are attached will' have a maximum Of air-pumping movementwith a given raising 'of the foot-treadle and will cause a maximum elfective stroke ofthe piston with' a given sizeof levers.
In the preferred embodiment Shown I accomplish these results by providing a pump Vbarrel which has a centrally-located longitudinal slot and means Vsuch as suitablefeet at opposite ends of the'barrel for supporting the same in a' horizontal position, a trunk piston closely fitting withinl said barrel;
ton within 'the barrel" by v"I'n'ea'ns lof `integral b'earingflanges andaniaxle orv pivot 'member inclosed within said barrel, said treadle i Aleverbeingpreferably movable within the barrel and through said Acentrally-disposed slot, a' centrally-'disposedl `link lever also moving vertically within the barrel. and through said Slot and formingatoggle joint withsaid treadle lever, said link being pivpump embodying my Specification of Letters Patent. horizontal alinement with the pivotalconnec- Vtions at the ends offsuchlevers and the tog- '.gle' joint, without locking, is caused inv its downward movement to :come well down withinthe barrel so-that the effective movement of the leversis materially increased and.` the piston stroke is proportionately lengthened.` Y
f In the -accompanying drawings,in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the Several views i Figurel isa longitudinal sectionof a invention, vwith the lever parts in raised position; f f
, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device with the levers lowered and locked in position; j
Fig. 8 is a plan view of said device; Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section on the line L-'4l of,Fig. 2; and 1 Fig. 5 is a rear end in locked position.-
Referring now to these drawings, `l Vindielevation of the ,device cates' a cylindrical barrel of a footy pump 4which isisuitably supported in ahorizontal position by vfeet 2, 2a at its opposite ends,
which feet may be as shown formed integral with cylinder heads 3, 3al respectively. The cylinder-head 3 is ,provided with the usual outlet.v valve 4 controlled bylball '4a' to `elbowillgand hose 5to the automobile tire or thelike, the said hose` 5 vbeing provided ,withV a lcoupling orconnection 5a Vfor that permit thepassag'e'of air' in an `outward di- Y rection only from the barrel l through the handling. and
llange portion 6e of which fits closely against the inner surface of the barrel but which is spacedC from the marginal edge of the washer 6c sor that upon movement of the piston in av forward direction air will be ejected,
but when the valve 4 is closed and the piston is moved rearwardly air will be admitted 1n front of the piston head between the marginal flange and barrel.
10 Thus'far, the device is old and wellknown A and it' is in combination with these old and well-known elements of noveljmeans for reciprocatingthe piston and procuring the results above indicated that myinvention resides, lwhich novel means I shall now -de-y scribe.
' The/barrel Y1 is-as shown provided in its upperf sur-face with ya slot 8 which extends :longitudinally ofl the barrel andv vertically 2'0 .through thev rear head 3*.V As illustrated, Said slot is widened-at its middle portion and reduced at `its Vopposite ends. f .ln theconstruction illustrated,the' dispo- Sition o f this slot 8 at the top of thefbarrel permitsthe entrance of .a single centrally-V disposed Atreadle-lever 7 within the barrel :andi allows. its central or axial connection `withthe piston` 6. As shown, the piston -is provided with vrearwardly-extending bear- 3o .ing langesf. in which is mountedV a pivot pin9 and` the end of the. treadle leverA is plvoted at the middle of said pin 9A and extends upwardly and through'the slot and is.;prov1ded at its outer end with a footi piece 7*.l l"Another single centrally disposed link ylever 10 is pivoted at itsrear end to .a fixed part of the. pump and, as shown, is :so pivoted ona pin 10a. Said lever-pin, as shown, is mounted in thefoot-piece 2a which 4011s illustrated comprises an integral extension of the rear end of the cylinderhead 3*". The link leverlO is as shown bifurcated and connected to the treadle by the pivot pin 10b, the central portion of the slot 8, being;
'M widened to permit. the entranceV within the lnot liii-use. Y, 4 A 1 vinor described my .inventioml claim H 1. ,A- oo t pumpV` embodying in combination .a pump-barrel having air-'egress means;
