To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Jnssn R. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benton, inthe county ofFranklin and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Tie Renewers, of which the following is a specification.
"This invent-ion relates'to a railroad tie renewer andjaims 'to generally sim lify the construction illustratedin Patent 1 o. 1,081,162, issued to me on December 9, 1913, the weight of the improved construction being materiallj7 lessened, thus making it more convenient to handle and to move from place to place.
Another important obj ect of the invention resides in housing the gearing of the apparatus ina portion of the supporting frame, thus protecting the gearing from cinders, rock, gravel or anything else that the road might be plastered with, andk which frequently interferes with the operation of a machine of this character.
The nature and advantages of this invention will be better understood when` the following detailed description is takenin connection with the `accompanying drawing, the invention-residingfin a construction, combi nation and arrangement of parts as claimed. Inthe drawings forming part oi this application, the like numerals of reference indicate similar1 parts in the several views, and

Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a pair of spaced parallel railroad ties of usual construction, B an intermediate tie adapted to be removed from beneath the rails indicated at C.
The apparatus forming the subject matter of this invention, embodies a frame made up of two spaced side members 10`and 11 respectively, each having the general design or outline illustrated in Figf 5. The forward corresponding ends of these members are rounded and shaped to provide for what I term nose portions 12, which when the apparatus is use are adapted. te engage against the web of one of therails C. The opposite ends or the side Y members are formed to provide projections 13 which reposelupon and aresecured to abar 15the latter being of alength to rest upon the ties A, being intermediately archedto bridge or span the `tie B as shown in Fig. 2. This cable is threaded through an elongated slot 19 -formed in atransverse bar 20 arranged between the side members and secured thereto, this `bar serving to strengthen and reinforce the frame struc-v ture. VThe free end of the cable has associated therewith a hook like member 21 adapti ed to engage one end of the tie B as shown in Fig. 1. The axis 23 ofthe winch pro` jects throughthe side members of the Jframe and is secured in position by any; suitable means. A ratchet wheel 24 is associated with the axis of the vwinch and is arranged eXteriorly of one of the side members, vwhile pivoted upon this side member isa pawl 25 which coperates with theratchet wheel 24 to prevent retrogradeA movement oli-the winch as will be readily understood. Rising from the upperedge of each side member of the'frame, is a handle 27 by means of which the 4apparatus in its entirety canbe` convniently lifted and carried from place to p ace.
As shown in Fig. 5, the side member 11 of the frame is recessed as at 28 to provide a housing for the gears 29 and 30 respectively, which are utilized to rotate the winch 17 to wind the cable 18 thereabout. The recess 28 and the gears above mentioned are covered by a removable plate 31 which prevents foreign matter, such as cinders, rock, gravel or anything else that the road might be plastered with, from interfering with the operation of the apparatus. The gear 29 is carried by the axis of the winch, while the gear 30, which is smaller than the gear 29, is fixed upon a shaft 32 journaled between the side members of the frame and at the rear of the winch 17. The shaft 32 projects beyond the side member 11 of the frame, and has fixed thereon a ratchet wheel 33, the latter being straddled by the forked extremity 34 of an operating lever 35 which is also mounted upon the shaft 32 A pawl Batentedi June 14, 1921. 36 is carried by the lever and cooperates with the ratchet wheel 33 to impart rotatiqn to the shaft 32. Y Obviously, this rotation is t C, and thehook like member carried by the cable engaged against one end of the tie B. When positioned in the manner stated, the nose portions 12 of the side members of the frame bear against the web of the adjacent Y rail C so as to. hold the frame in position when a pull is exerted upon the cable 18. rihe operating lever 35'is movedupoii its pivot in the proper direction to rotate the shaft-32 andthe winch 17, and as the cable 18. winds about the winch, the tie B' is removed from beneath the rail. A new tie is placed in position with the same rapparatus and with ,the same operation;
TNhile it is believed that from the :foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall with` in the scope of what is claimed;
" What I claim is:

A tie iene'wer comprising spaced parallel' side members, a supporting bar secured tothe members and projecting from correspondingends thereof, a winch journaled between the saidt parallel members, one of said memberslbeing recessed, a gear carried by the axis of said winch and arranged with Vin said recess, a shaft journaled between the side members at the rear of said winch, a
second gear carried by the said shaft and arranged within said recess and meshing with the gear of said winch, a removable plate associated with said side member and covering the said recess and said gears, means for rotating the said shaftwhereby said winch is rotated, al cable having one end secured to the winch and adapted to be wound thereabout and unwound therefrom, a guide mounted on the frame for said cable, a hook like element carried by the fiee end of the cable, and means for preventing retrograde movement of the winch.
