Be it lrnown that l, PETER MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springdale, in the county of Stevens and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements, in tie pullers for use in the construction and repair of railway road-beds, especially adapted for removing railway ties. rThe primary object of the invention is the provision of hand operated mechanism for pulling the tie out of or into position in the road bed, which mechanism is comparatively simple in construction and operation, inexpensive in cost of production, and readily adapted for attachment to the fixed railway rail as a support. To this end the invention consists essentially in a portable device involving novel combinations and arrangements of the supporting frame and duplex capstan, together with temporary attaching means for use in connection with the rail, as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth.
In the accompanying drawings l have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles 0f my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a railroad with the tie puller of my invention shown in operative position for pulling a tie from the roadbed.

a lower open central portion shape but has horizontal face 3 with a straight or flat adapted to rest upon the top surface of a tie as in Figs. 1 and 2, to provide the main support for the appliance when in operative position near the end of the tie. rEhe frame is located at the outer side of the rail and the lateral flanges 2 project toward the rail, with the extension or jaw 4l on the flange adapted to engage the under side of the rail base, a horizontal slot or recess 5 being provided in each of the lateral flanges above the jaw 4 to engage over the outer flange of the rail base, as best seen in Fig. 3. After the appliance has been properly placed with its recesses 5 engaged over the rail-base flanges and the lower jaws l beneath the rail base, a pair of hooked detents 6, which are pivoted at 7 on the lateral flanges, are turned down over the rail head R as seen in Fig. 3. The free edge of the lateral flanges is also notched at 5 to lit up under one side of the rail head, and it will be seen that by utilizing the jaw 1, recess 5, notch 5 and detent 6 on each of the lateral flanges, the appliance with facility may quickly be attached to or detached from the rail. The presence of the recess 5 and the notch 5 in the edge of the two lateral flanges provides for a brace or lug for engagement with the rail, which engagement, together with the support of the main'plate through its surface 3 on the top of the tie, provides for a rigid and well braced anchorage of the capstan frame for operation of the device.
rlhe duplex capstan includes a pair of vertically disposed spindles 8, one located at each side of the supporting tie and journaled in bearing lugs 9, 9 which project from the respective ends of the main frame plate Vtoward the center thereof, the upper ends of the spindles being journaled in openings therefor in the top plate 9 of the frame. Each spindle has a drum 10 secured thereto and located between the pairs of perforated bearing lugs 9, 9, and a cable, as 11 or 12 with its ends attached to the drums are provided to be wound upon the drums, the loop of the cable may be passed over the end of the tie to which power is to be applied. At the upper end of each spindle, and located above the top plate 9 is a pinion as 13, and between these pinions is interposed a master gear wheel 1li. the spindle of whichis journaled in the top plate 9 and the head 15 of the spindle has a bar or lever 16 to be inserted in one of the openings 17 therein to turn the master Wheel.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is` l. The combination in a tie puller as described With a supporting fra-me comprising a main plate and a duplex capstan with opneath the rail and recessed and notched as described, and a hooked detent pivoted on each iange to engage the rail head.

The combination in a tie puller With a frame comprising a main plate having a surface for support on a tie, of laterally eX- tending lianges on said plate each provided With a projecting jaw to iit under a rail, said ianges having recesses and notches forming a brace lug for engagement'vvith a rail, and a pivoted, hooked detent on each liange to engage over the rail head forV the purpose described. 3. The combination with a main plate, of a pair of spaced lspindles supported therein each having a drum', a cable on each drum the cables, a pinion for each spindle, a master gear engaging said pinions and means for revolving said gear, lateral flanges on said plate, and means on said flanges for temporarily attaching said plate to a rail.
