GEORGE C. ADAMS AND WILLIAM F. ADAMS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOTTLE-GAPPING MACHINE.
' Application filed. March 2,
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that we, Gnonon C. ADAMS and WILLIA F. ADAMs, citizens of the United States, and residents of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Capping Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in bottle capping machines and its object is to provide a cheap and simple device by which crimped caps or corks may be firmly pressed on bottles so as to make a good, air-tight connection.
e accomplish this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompany ing drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our capping machine; Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the same along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a horizontal sectional view along the line 3-8 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings in particular, a standard (1), consisting of two upright members (2) and two horizontal members (3) and (4) connecting and bracing said vertical members, is erected 011 a platform (6). The upright members are rectangular plates, preferably of metal, and the distance between them, being constant at their upper parts, widens toward the bottom. The horizontal. members are channels turned upside down, the legs being connected to the uprights while the webs form the braces or struts. The webs extend somewhat outside the uprights as shown at (7 and are pro vided with vertically alined perforations which form a guide for the plunger rod The latter carries at its bottom end a cylindrical head (9), which is provided at its bottom with a recess (11) of sufiicient size toinclose the cap of a bottle, and converges near the top. The plunger rod has fastened thereto, intermediate of the two horizontal members (3) and (41), two parallel links (14:) pivoting on a pin (16) extending through the plunger rod. downward from'their pivotal support and are adapted to be vertically reciprocated by a lever 18, which has a forked end and each prong of which pivotally engages the lower end of one of said links by the pins (17),
These links hang Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 30, 1921 1921. Serial No. 449,042.
which latter two are axially alined. The lever (18) has a short arm (19) extending beyond the pivot (17) and this arm is pivotally supported on the transverse shaft (21) supported in the two upright members (2), while the long arm (22) of the lever is adapted to be handled by the person using the device. It will be seen that in this manner 011 an upward motion of the long arm (22) the pivot (17) of the link (14) will move upward on a circular curve and that the vertical motion will be imparted to the plunger rod (8), which, being guided by the horizontal members and 1 (4), cannot partake of the lateral motion of the pivot (17). In a similar manner a downward motion of the long arm (22) of the lever (18) will impart vertical downward motion to the plunger.
The device works as follows: The bottle 7 to be capped is placed below the plunger and the cap interposed between the plunger and the bottle. A pressure on the long arm of the lever (18) will cause the recess in the plunger head to firmly grip the cap and press it over and around the top of the bottle.
' We claim:
1. A bottle capping device comprising a vertical standard having two horizontal members, one being above the other, a plunger guided vertically in' said horizontal members, two registering links pivotally engaging said plunger on opposite sides anda gaging said plunger on opposite sides and a forked lever having its forked end pivotally supported in said. standard and its prongs operative-1y engaging said links for imparting vertical motion to said plunger, said plunger having a cylindrical head at its bottom and a recess in said head adapted to receive a cap.
