Description

J. K. RUSSELL MACHINE FOR CLEANING BLACKBOARD ERASERS. APPLICATION FILED JULY 9,1919.
Patented Apr. 19, .1921.
\ l I l l 14- i ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES JOHN K. RUSSELL, OF WATERLOO, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR CLEANING- BLAGKIBOARD-ERASERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1921.
Application filed July 9, 1919. Serial No. 309,598.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN K. RUssnLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVaterloo, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Machine for Cleaning Blackboard-Erasers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a particularly simple and efiicient machine for cleaning blackboard erasers and comprises generally, a box having a perforated partition therein, a reciprocating head having means for attaching erasers thereto, and means for reciprocating said head rectilinearly against and away from the perforated partition.
In describing this invention, reference is had tothe accompanying drawings in which like characters designate parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my device for cleaning erasers.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane of line 2--2, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 is the box or closure for my device, having a partition 2 thereon, separating the box or closure into compartments 3, 4. The partition 2 as here shown is perforated as shown at 5 throughout its entire surface for a purpose hereinafter described. Said perforated partition may be a wire screen or something of similar construction.
6 is the reciprocating head or movable partition having a shaft 7 fixed thereto sup ported in bearings 8 in the compartment 3.
9 are the erasers, fixed to one side of the head 6, between the perforated partition 2 and said head by spring clamps 10, and having the dust removing portion 11 extending toward said partition.
Means is provided tending to hold said parts 11 of the erasers against the partition and as here shown, comprises a coiled spring 12 having one end thereof fixed at 13 to the end wall 14 of the compartment 4 and the other end thereof passing through an opening 15 in the partition 2 and fixed at 16 to the reciprocating head 6.
Means is provided for moving the head 6 corresponding with the erasers attached thereto rectilinearly away from the perforated partition, against the action of the spring 12 and then releasing said head, allowing the spring to return the head in a straight line toward the perforated partition, thereby bringing the portions 11 of the erasers against said perforated partition with considerable force.
As here shown, said means comprises a shaft 17, entering into the compartment 3 from one side thereof and journaled in a bearing 18 near its inner end, and in a bearing on the side of the compartment, a crank arm 19 mounted on the inner end of said shaft, having a roller 20 thereon. The roller 20 is beneath the shaft 7 and coacts with a pin 21 depending from said shaft to move the head 6 away from the perforated partition and then release the same.
The shaft 17 is rotated by means of a gear 22 mounted on the outer end of said shaft and meshing with a gear 23 actuated by a hand wheel 24.
25 is a suction fan which draws the dust from the compartment 4 through an opening 26 in one of the side walls of said compartment and exhausts same through an opening 27 in the fan casing 28.
Said fan is operated by means of a belt 29 connecting a pulley 30 on the fan with a pulley 31 integral with the hand wheel.
What I claim is:
A machine for cleaning erasers comprising a box having a perforated partition therein, a movable partition on one side of the perforated partition having means for attaching erasers thereto between said partitions, a spring tending to hold the movable partition against the perforated partition, means for moving the movable partition away from the perforated partition, and then releasing said partition and a fan for drawing the dust from the other side of the perforated partition, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Waterloo, in the county of Seneca, and State of New York, this 7th day of July, 1919.
. JOHN K. RUSSELL.
