UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK WIGGINS HOUSE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLEVE- LAND NON-EXPLOSIVE LAMP COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHADE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,306, dated April 1, 1873; application filed December 6, 1872.
To, all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK WIGGINs HOUSE, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have made an invention of certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification of the same.
My invention has reference to the means of holding glass shades or globes to lamps for burning kerosene and other liquids; and my invention consists of a new shade-holder, and of the combination thereof with the burner of the lamp.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I have represented in the accompanyin g drawing, and will proceed to describe, the mode in which I have embodied lnyinvention with success.
Figure 1 of said drawing represents a plan of my new shade holder combined with a lamp-burner. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a side view of the shade holder detached from the burner. Fig. 4 represents a side view of my shade-holder with arms of a different form from those represented in Fig. 3.
The shade-holder represented in said drawing has a ringstock, A, and three arms, B
its interior a slightly-projecting rim or flange,
m, which catches upon the rim 20 at the periphery of the said gallery, so that the ringstock is supported by the latter. The ring. stock also is provided with a fastening for securing it to the burner; and the fastening represented in the drawing is a screw, 1), which is arranged in such manner that its point can be screwed against the under side of the chimney-gallery to secure the shadeholder thereto.
When the shade-holder is applied to the gallery the side of the stock opposite the screw b is introduced beneaththe hub c of the screw-fastening for the chimney, so that the hub prevents the shade-holder from rising at one side of the burner, while the screw b prevents it from rising at the opposite side.
I prefer to make the breadth of the ringstoek from its upper edge to the under side of the internal flange a little greater than the distance from the under side of the hub c to the upper side of the rim of the chim hey-gallery, and to notch the upper side of the ring-stock at the place which is to correspond with the position of the said hub 0, so that the notch indicates the part of the shade-holder which is to be applied to the hub c, and also tends to prevent the shadeholder when in place from being turned horizontally on the burner.
The internal flange may, of course, be replaced by projections or other means of preventing the shade-holder from slipping down over the burner.
The arms B of the shade-holder may be of any desired form to suit the shade or globe, and the form of the ring-stock may be modified to suit the particular burner to which it is to be applied.
A shade-holder constructed as above described can be manufactured for a low cost, is readily applied to the burner, and is securely fastened to it without interfering with the operation of the hinge of the chimneygallery or the trimming of the wick.
I claim as my invention- 1. The improved shade-holder constructed, substantially as before set forth, with a ringstock, a set of hook-ended arms free at their outer ends, an internal flange, and a screw arranged, as described, in position to bear against the under side of the gallery of the burner to which the shadeholder may be applied.
2. The combination of the said shade-holder with the chimney gallery of the burner by means of the flange and the screw of the shadeholder and the hub of the fastening of the chimneygallery, substantially as before set forth.
Witness my hand this 29th day of November, 1872.
' MARK WIGGINS HOUSE. Witnesses:
M. R. KEITH, W. H. PEARSON.
