IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,144., dated March 3, 1574; application filed September 20, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY T. SANFORD, of Nicholville, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Chimney Support, of which the following is a specification:

The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section through a lamp burner and chimney, showing my improved chimneysupport.

The object of my invention is to so attach the chimneys to the burners of coal-oil lamps in common use that their dropping off and breaking are fully prevented also the cracking of the same, caused by the pressure of the burner against the inside and outside of the chimney.

The lamp may be held in any position without droppingthe chimney, and tlie'supportin g device be easily adjusted to difl'erent sizes of chimneys.

My invention consists in an arrangement of springs and hooked wires with a lamp-burner, for the purpose of holding glass chimneys securely, and thereby preventing the destruction of them, which is so frequently incident to most of the attaching devices heretofore used. The wires are retained in position and set to the sides of the chimney by screwing their lower ends through lugs of the burner, clasping thereby the chimney in connection with several springs on which the base of the chimney is supported. A solid band, encircling the burner around the base of the chimney, secures a steady light, as no air can enter the chimney.

In the drawing, A represents the burner; B, the chimney; and G, the wires, passing up from the base A of the burner to the top of the chimney. The base A of burner A is pro vided with lugs a, which extend at opposite sides and under right angles to the wick-tube, and serve to secure the threaded ends of wires 0 through the same. Wires 0 pass through guide perforations of the lower perforated burner plate, the top plate being thereby firmly held in position. The upper ends of wires 0 are bent, forming small hooks b, which take hold on the top of the chimney B and secure the same. Two or more band-springs, D, are appliedto the base A below lugs (1, extending radially over the bottom. plate, and are bent up at their ends to carry the base of the chimney, and retain it firmly together with wires 0.

The wires 0 do not in the least obstruct the light, and may be lengthened or shortened by their screw ends, so as to suit longer or shorter chimneys.

A solid rim, (1, encircles the perforated burner-plate and the base of the chimney, and prevents thereby the admission of air under the base of the chimney, producing a steadier light and a more equal expansion and contraction of the chimney, so that the same is protected from cracking too easily.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of burner A A, having supporting-lugs a and band-springs D, with wires 0 and chimney B, to securely retain the latter, substantially as shown and described.
