To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDRICK R. TUCKER, a oitiz enof the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Headboards for Graves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention'has relation to certain new and useful improvements in a head board for a grave and has for its primary object the provision of a head board which will be of improved construction and comparatively inexpensive and in which the metallic letters may be readily arranged and secured in sockets formed therefor in the head board front plate carried by the supporting post which may be readily driven into the ground.

The invention has for another object the provision of a head board fora graveof the character stated which will be constructed and arranged so that the letters may bereadily placed in the rows of sockets formed therefor and securely held against turning movement or displacement b the fastening means employed for fastening the letters in position.

With the foregoing and other objects'in View as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved form of head board for a grave.

Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, taken on the plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the characters removed from the front board or plate, showing the front face of the character and the block upon which it is carried.

Fig. 5 is a detail view of the character removed, showing the rear side thereof and the threaded shank extended therefrom.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view of the front plate, showing one of the sockets formed therein to receive a removable character as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.

Referring more inudetail to the drawings T in which similar referencecharacters designate corresponding parts throughout the in and an upper extension 4 having a perforation 5 therein. A pair of cross arms or side extensions 6 are also preferably formed on the upper portion thereof and just below the upper extension it, so that the plate may be of the form of a cross, although this is not essential. The perforations 3 and 5 are provided forfastening members 7 which also extend through the supporting post 8 which is of such a length that it may be readily driven into the ground the proper distance to properly support the plate 1 above the ground, it being understood that the lower end of the plate extends below the bottom extension 2 of the plate 1.

A number of transverse rows of sockets 9 are formed in the mainor body portion of the plate 1 and in the upper extension 4 to receive suitable letters and numerals or other characters which may be arranged on the plate 1 to give the information desired such as the relationship of the party whose grave is being marked by this head board, the name of the party, the date of the birth, the date of the death and the age at the time of the death, or any other information desired.

Each socket 9 is of the roper size to receive a block 10 preferab y of rectangular form so that the letter or numeral or other character 11 on the outer or upper face of the block 10 will stand out from the front face of the plate 1 while the front or outer face of the block 10 is flush with the outer face of the platel. Extending through the remaining thickness of the front plate 1 from the center of each socket 9 is a shank accommodating opening 12 which has its inner end connecting with the reduced socket 9' provided for the rectangular form or squared inner end portion 13 of the shank 14 projecting from the rear face of the block 10 and adapted to be extended through the shank accommodating opening 12 to receive a nut 14: or the like upon its threaded rear or free ends so as to securely hold the charcharacters arranged in the order shown in- Fig. 1 of the drawings, the number of sockets 9 in each transverse row being about the.

proper number to accommodate the words and numerals suggested 'by Fig; 1 of the drawings and the upper transverse row consisting of threesockets to contain blocks 10 i having characters spelling the usual abbreviations such as Bro, Sis, Rev, etc., while the long row immediately therebeneath will accommodate a sufiicient number of the blocksl0 to spell the'last name and also the first name or first initials of the party for whom the head board has been provided. The number and arrangement of the sockets 9 may be varied as desired, and the character carrying blocks 10 with the characters 11 thereon are preferably composed of anonrusting metal or the like so that the inscripg tion mayfremain visible and intact for a long period of time if not indefinitely. The plate 1 may be constructed of any suitable material such as metal and the size or construction thereof may be Varied as desired.

While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been'shown and described, it willbe understood that many minor changes 7 in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the openings extended therethrough and communicating with the second mentioned socket, character carrying blocks adapted fo'rsnug engagement in the first mentioned socket, threaded shanks for said blocks having squared portions for snug engagement in the second mentioned sockets of said plate and the remainder of said shanks being adapted to be extended through the shank receiving openings of the plate, means threaded on said shank to prevent withdrawal of said blocks, said blocks having snug engagement in the first mentioned socket to prevent turning of said blocks, and characters extended outwardly from the outer faces of said blocks.
