Description

W. I. HOPE.
*COMBINED BRUSH AND COMB.
- APPLICATION FILED AUG-4, 1919. 1,370,649, Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
- William J. Hope. 313 W Mom,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921,
Application filed August 4, 1919. Serial No. 315,198.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Horn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Tunica, in the county of Tunica and tate of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Brushes and Combs, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention relates to combination brush and comb devices, especially adapted, although not necessarily limited, to instruments for brushing and combing the hair, and has for its object to provide a device of the kind which may be used when desired initially as a brush or comb or may be used simultaneously as a combination brush and comb both with the brush leading the comb and comb leading the brush in operation.
In the drawin s, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the com ined brush and comb;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the brush construction showing one of the teeth in elevation;
Figs. 3 and 4 show manners of using the device combining the use of brush and comb simultaneously.
Like characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved device which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a comb embodying teeth 10 of substantially the usual and ordinary form protruding from a back 11 integral therewith in the usual well known manner. As shown at Fig. 1, the comb is provided with a handle member 12 which, however, forms no part of the present invention and is merely a matter of convenience in manipulating the comb 10 and the brush carried thereby to be hereinafter more fully described.
The brush comprises tufts of bristles or like material 13, which are connected to or inserted in the back 11 of the comb as shown in the drawing secured by means of such insertion. The tufts of bristles are so inserted or connected with the back of the comb that the major axes of the tufts are disposed at an angle both to the major axes of the teeth and to a line perpendicular thereto. In other words, the major axes of the tufts of bristles form an acute angle or an angle less than 90 with the major axes of the-teeth.
The reason for forming the brush with the bristles disposed at the angle disclosed in the drawings will be perfectly apparent from an examination of Figs. 3 and 4 wherein is disclosed two of the many manners in which the device may be employed. It is obvious that the comb or brush may be used independently and no showing is made of the manner of such use. For combined use, however, Figs. 3 and 4 SllOW that as disclosed at Fig. 3 the device may be used with the comb precedlng or leading the brush so that the hair 1s smoothed to brushed effect after bemg treated by the comb or when found desirable the brush may lead the comb leaving the hair showing comb divisions which by some people is considered desirable. In either event both the comb and the brush are simultaneously and conjointly used in the same operation and to produce the same final eifect. a
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i A combination brush and comb having a back provided with spaced teeth integral with the back, said back provided, on both sides. with two parallel rows of spaced, inwardly-tapering sockets having their axes at an angle with the teeth, the sockets of the upper row positioned above the spaces between the sockets of the lower row, bristles secured in and extending from the comb back, said bristles being grouped and the roups bunched at one end and adapted to t into said sockets leaving the other ends of each group free, the bristles extending from the upper row being longer than the bristles of overlap and overhang the ends of the lower bristles, and a handle projecting from said comb back and integral therewith- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of July, A. D. dred and nineteen.
