The invention consists as follows: Twobrushes are arranged on one handle, one having the bristles on the concave, the other on the convex side; this improved style of toothl; brushes can be closed, so that it can be kept practically secured from dirt by a single cover enveloping both brushes.

With tooth-brushes made in accordance to the present specification, the horizontal movement of the cleansing surfaces of the brush,

so harmful to the teeth, and hitherto required in tooth-brushes, is avoided. The cleansing of the teeth is performed with. this modern, improved tooth-brush by a Vertical movement of the same, the tooth-briish being formed in such manner that the teeth can be cleaned, both front and back, without reversing the brush. The cleansing of teeth by a vertical movement of the tooth-brush has the great advantage that the. gums are thus protected and not injured by the brush. Then again, owing to the unevenness of the teeth, which are in a vertical direction, several parts are not reached when brushed horizontally and cannot be cleansed thoroughly.

Food rests and tartar is deposited on those parts of the teeth not cleansed by toothbrushes that worked horizontally and the teeth thus suffer injuries and disorders. Besides that, horizontal brushing, or polishing is harmful to the tooth enamel, as experience has taught. Moreover, by brushing teeth in horizontal direction,a pressure is exerted perpendicularly on the axes of the roots of the teeth loosening them,especially in the case of elderly people, and producing toothache.

The object of the invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation, partly in section of a brush embodying our invention;

Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the brushes shown in Fig. 1; and

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the other of the brushes shown in Fig. 1.

On the upper end of a multi-part handle composed of the members 16 and 17 and particularly on the upper part of a curved. portion 14 of the handle member 16 is a curved piece 4 with bristles on the concave side 59 thereof. These bristles are indicated by the reference numeral 3. The curved part 14 of the handle 16 is so bent that one can work ma practical manner without touching the chin or nose. The other handle member 17 lies substantially parallel to the handle mem- 55. her 16 and has a curved portion 15 at itsupper end as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and this curved portion is provided with a curved piece 7, having on its convex side bristles 11. The two curved portions 4 and. 7, provided 69 with the bristles 3 and 11 respectively, are

so arrangedwith respect to each other that the directions of the bristles are identical, that is, the bristles of the two curved parts are turned toward the user. In the case of 6;: the curved piece 7, provided withbristles on the convex side, theibrush formed by such bristles isso shaped that the bristles are longer in the middle than at thesides, as is clearly-shown in Fig. 2. This arrangement is 7C important because, supposing that the curved portion 7 is formed according to the arrangement of the human teeth, an independent and more powerful cleansing of the one half is possible without simultaneously treating the other half.

For the purpose of keeping and transporting the brush structure more easily and simply and to pack it better when traveling, the handle portions 16 and 17 are pivotally mounted to each other by a stud 18, so that for cleansing purposes the portions 16 and 17 may lie in alignment with each other and when it is necessary to transport the same, they are brought into substantial parallelism with each other, as shown in Fig. 1. Thus one cover may be used to protect both brush surfaces.

We claim:

1.
