STACY B. HASELTINE, 0E CHIGAG'Q, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
CHAZY, NEW YORK.
DEAFT-YOKE FOB RAILWAY-GAB DRAFT-RIGGING.
Application filed July 5,
provide an efficient and simple draft yoke and one inwhich there maybe a swing ng relation between the yoke head and the yoke strap in order'to permit the lateral movement of the draw bar in service. Other objects will appear from the description of the device hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation. part in vertical section, of 'a' draft yoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the forward portion of said yoke. Fig. 3 is a part cross section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4e is a persp ctive view of one of the clocks employed in said construction. Fig. 5 is asect-ional view of a yoke head and the adjacent ends of the yoke strap illustrating a modification. And Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a further modification.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a draw oar shown bythe dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings, 11 a yoke head. 12 a yoke strap having an upper arm 13 and a lower arm 14. The said yoke strap is a one-piece member, the arms thereof having at their forward free ends the inturned gibs 15, each of said gibs being of a T-head shape and beingadapted to engage within the blocks 16 hereinafter described. The yoke head 11 is of a general box-like form having a central longitudinal apere ture to receive the draw bar 10, having its sides slotted, as at 17. for the passage of a. coupler key and having in its top member and in its lower member undercut open ngs 18 having enlarged circular under bearmgs 22 at their inner ends within which the blocks 16 are received. The blocks 16 are four in number, two being employed for each opening 18 in the yoke head. They are of the gen Specification of Letters Patent. Patented F b 22 1921 19i9. Serial No. 308,766.
eral shape shown in detail in Fi 4 of the drawing, having an arcuate edge 19 and an opposed edge provided with a shoulder 20. When the parts are in assembled position,
as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the blocks 16, one forwardly and one rcarwardly arranged within the openings 22 about the gibs 1.5. secure the arm of the yoke to which said gib is attached within the yoke head. This is accomplished through the'fiange 21 upon the end of the gib' which engages against the shoulders 20 upon thc bearing blocks 16. ll' hen'in its normal assembled position, the T head of the gib is transverse to'the axis of the yoke head. In disassembling. the yoke strap 12 is rotated sufiioiently-as,for instance -to place the same transversely to the axis of. the yoke head, and when in this position the blocks 16 may be withdrawn after the yoke strap has been slipped from the head through the openings '18 longitudinally provided in the upper and lower walls of theheadand forwardlyv opening therein. In assembling the parts. the reverse of this operation employed. The construction provides a pivoted head upon the yoke strap 12 which permits its'swingiug in reference to the yoke strap on lateral movement of the draw bar in train operation. When mounted between the draft members of a car. the yoke and head cannot he accidentally or otherwise disassembled because the relative turning of the head and yoke strap will he insufficient for that purpose. but when dismounted from the car. it will be apparent that the yoke strap and head may be readily assembled and disassembled.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification which differs principally from the structure shown 5 in Fig. l in that the blocks. in the aperture in the yoke head are each in one piece in stead of two. Referring to Fig. 5. the numeral. 30 indicate the upper arm of a yoke strap and 31 the lower arm thereof. only'the forward portion of said arms being shown in r the figure. it yoke head is indicated at i 32 having the sides 33 and top and bottom 34 and 35 respectively. The top and bot tom each has an opening, as indicated at 36, and within each opening is mounted a single block 37' having a recess 38 therein. the said recess being provided with a T-head opening for the passageof the T-h'ead' inturned gib of the adjacent yoke arm, said the block through the opening in the yoke head and permits the pivoting or'swingmg of the yoke head iii-reference to the yoke arms. In disassembling the yoke strap 'from the yoke head the strap is turned sufficiently-.as, for instance, 90-to permit the withdrawal of the T-headed gibs from the blocks 37, through the. slots 70 in the head. When the coupler is withdrawn, the blocks maybe removed from the interior of, the yoke head. In assembling the yoke head and yoke strap, the reverse of this operation is employed.
In 6 a further modification is illustrated. In this modification, the numeral 50 indicates an ugper yoke arm and 51 a lower yoke arm. he rear end of the yoke is'i-ndicated at 52, the intermediate portions of the aim being broken away in the drawing. The yoke arms are separately made and when placed in assembled position are riveted together at their rear ends, as indicated at 53. 54 indicates a yoke head provided with the usual sides and having in the top and bottom members 55 and 56, respectively, the openings 57-57. These openings are each adapted to receive a block 58, which is provided with a flange 59 seated against the shoulders 60 provided on the interior faces of the top and bottom members of the head. The blocks 58 are circular in shape and are themselvesp'rovided each with an opening 61 having a forward inset portion 62 to receive an inturned forward end 63 a; a oke arm. The'blocks 58 permit the swive of the head upon the yoke strap. In assembling, the blocks 58 are inserted from the inner side of the yoke head into the openings 57. The forward ends of the yoke arms are then inserted in the openings in the blocks 58 angularly, as ndicated by the dotted lines in Fig. '6, showing the position of the upper yoke arm. The-rear ends of the yoke arms are then brought together,
when the forward ends will assume the o-' sition in the blocks 58 as shown by the ull lines and indicated by the numerals 64-64.-
The' rear ends of the arms are then riveted together, as indicated at 53, thus providing a. headed yoke having a pivotal connection between the head and the yoke arms. I claim:
1. In a yoke for railway car draft rigging.
in combination, a yoke strap, a yoke head and blocks, the yoke head having openings to receive said blocks and the yoke strap having inturned T-headed gibs received in said blocks.
2. In a draft yoke for railway cars, in combination, a yoke head having circular opposed openings therein, circular blocks within said openings and a yoke strap having T-heads at its free ends, the said blocks being provided with openings for the reception of said T-heads.
3. In a draft yoke for railway cars,. in combination, a yoke-head having opposed openings therein, a yoke strap having T'- heads at its free ends and blocks mounted in the openings in the yoke head, the said blocks being provided with flanges to prevent their outward movement through the openings in said head, and the said blocks being rovided with openings to receive the T-hea s of the yoke strap.
4. In a draft yoke for railway cars,in combination, a yoke strap, a yoke head and blocks, the yoke head being provided with opposed openings to receive said blocks, the yoke strap having ends received within said blocks, the blocks being provided with flanges to'prevent their outward passage through the openings in the head, the yoke strabein rovided with fian es en a in b v D b D t:
the said blocks.
5. In a draft yoke for railway cars, in combination, a yoke strap and yoke headswingingly mounted thereon, the yoke head being provided with openings and having blocks mounted in said openings, the said blocks being provided with openings to re.-
ceive the ends of the yoke strap, thesaid ends of the yoke strap being provided with a T-head adapted to pass through openings in the blocks in one position and to be held within said blocks in another position.
' connecting means having detachable shouldered interlocking en gagement with the for ward ends of said arms, said head having upper and lower shouldered openings for detachably' rotatably receiving said pivotal connecting means.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have'hereunto subscribed my name this 17th day of June, 1919.
