WILLIAM J. REGAN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOIR, TO THE MGCONWAY &
TORLEY COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
DRAFT-GEAR YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. REGAN, a citizen of the United States residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear Yokes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of draft gear for railway cars and particularly to the construction of a yoke therefor. The purpose of the invention is to produce a strong and very reliable structure which is of simple form and easily manufactured. This object is accomplished, generally stated, by constructing the yoke in part of cast metal and in part of wrought metal, the cast metal forming a head member that is adapted to be secured to a car coupler, and the wrought metal being fashioned as a loop or spring-pocket to receive the usual followers and springs or other cushioning unit, the forward end of the spring-pocket member being embedded in the cast metal of the said head and constituting a transversely extending reinforcement therefor at the rear of the lugs on the head provided for engaging the fastening device by Which the car coupler is secured to the yoke.
There are other features of the invention, residing in particular structural forms and elemental relations, all as will hereinafter appear and be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings chosen for the purpose of illustrating the best mode in which I contemplate applying the invention the scope whereof is defined in the claims,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a draft gear yoke embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in vertical central section, of the form of yoke illustrated in Fig. 1, the relation of the car coupler thereto being shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the rear end of a coupler stem which is shown as of bifurcated form. The coupler is preferably connected to the draft gear yoke by means of a tail pin or pivot pin 2 which passes through the bifurcated rear end of the coupler 1 and through forwardly extending cooperating lugs 3, 3 and 4 with which the cast metal head 5 of the draft gear yoke is provided. The lugs 3, 3 and 4t are provided with alined perforations 6, 6 and 7, respec tively, corresponding to the diameter of the tail pin 2, so that, as will be readily apparent, the tail pin is in quadruple shear when the device is in service.
The spring-pocket member 8 of the yoke is preferably formed as an endless loop of wrought iron, its forward portion 9 being embedded in the cast metal head 5 and extending transversely thereof behind the lugs 3, 3 and l so as to reinforce and greatly strengthen that portion of the head.
The rear face 10 of the head 5 of the yoke is adapted to contact the forward follower (not shown) of the well-known cushioning mechanism which is usually placed within the spring-pocket member 8 of the yoke.
In manufacturing the form of draft gear yoke herein described, a piece of wrought iron of proper size is first bent and preferably welded together to form the endless loop or spring -pocket member 8. The spring-pocket member is then placed in a suitable mold and the head member 5 of the yoke is cast in place around it.
I claim:
1. A draft gear yoke comprising a head adapted to be secured to a car coupler, and a spring-pocket member rigidly connected to said head, said spring-pocket member having an inwardly extending transverse portion embraced by said head, and said head being cast around said transversely extending portion.
:2. A draft gear yoke comprising a wrought metal spring-pocket member and a head cast thereon, said parts having interlocking portions in alinement with and to the rear of the coupler connection whereby they are rigidly united, and said head being adapted to be secured to a car coupler.
3. A draft gear yoke comprising a springpocket member formed as an endless loop, and a head rigidly connected to said springpocket member and adapted to be secured to a car coupler, said head being cast around the said spring-pocket member so as to firmly embrace the forward end thereof.
4. A. draft gear yokecomprising a cast metal head adapted to be secured to a car coupler, and a spring-pocket member formed of Wrought metal the forward end of said Wrought metal spring-pocket being embedded in said head and forming an inwardly extending transverse reinforcement therefor.
having longitudinally extending lateral 10 lugs and an intermediate lug, said lugs being adapted to receive means for securing a car coupler to the yoke, and a Wrought metal spring-pocket member having a portion extending behind said lugs and embedded in said head and reinforcing the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature.
WILLIAM J. nEeAN.
