KEY INDICATOR. APPLICATION FILED MAR` 3. |919.

A UNITED s'mfrns PATENT OFI-ica KEY-INDICATOR. i i i fspecmcatimfof Leterme Patented Feb.. 22, k1921.
, Appneation mea Mareas, 1919. serial No. 280,203,
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Hanny W. FALooN'nn, a 'citizen of the United" States, and a resident of the county of Wood and Sta-te of Ohio, near Perrysburg, Ohio. have invented a certain new and useful Key-Indicator; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to key locating or finding means for use on key rings or the like together with a plurality of keys, and has for its object to facilitate the finding of a particular one of a plurality of keys in the dark or at other times even though all of the keys are of the same shape and appearance.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated kin the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention connected to a key ring carrying a plurality of keys. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the member embodying my invention the same as shown in Fig. 1, with the memoranda inclosing portion thereof open, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a slip ring employed to retain the memoranda inclosing portion closed. c
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a key ring, 2 a plurality of keys carried thereby, and 3 the member which in combination with the ring and keys embodies the invention and for convenience may be termed the key indicator.
The member 3 comprises a shank portion 4 having the apertured key ring carrying tongue 5 at one end thereof` and preferably projecting laterally therefrom, and having its other end provided with an enlargement 6, in disk form, in the present instance. This enlargement is designed to provide a memoranda space 7 on one side thereof for data as to the diiferent'keys, and it is preferable to give each key designation, a number which .bears a predetermined relation to the member l3 with respect to all of the keys. For 1instance,`the keys might be numbered from 1 up in either direction from the number 3, and the designating number alone placed in the memoranda space together with a designation of the use of the particular key. The owner knows the relation which the number bears tothe indicator member 3, and should it be necessary for him to refresh his memory as to the use of any key, he will instantly know, upon referring to the memoranda, that key No. 2, for instance, counting one way from the member 3, is the office key. yA stranger wouldfnot know the meaning of the numbers and the relation which each bears to said member. y
The purpose of attaching the key ring or other key carrying member to the indicator member 3 at one side of its longitudinal axis is to enable a person to determine which way from said member the Vkeys are numbered. For instance, if the tongue 5 or part of the member 3 is disposed downward with the key ring suspended therefrom, the user knows that the keys number either from the right or left of member as the casek may be. Should the position of the member 3, be reversed, however, with the tongue 5 projecting upward, the numbers of the keys, if the same as before, would read in the reverse' di rection from the indicatorV member. It is therefore important to have the indicator member of such shape that the user may easily determine in the dark the position the indicator member should assume with respect to the keys to find the key desired.
The memoranda side of the enlargement 6 is preferably closed by the hinged cover part 8. which may be pivoted to one edge thereof, as at 9, and have its opposite edge providedV with a spring tongue 10 for fitting into a Vrecess or opening 11 in the shank por tion 4 of the member 3 and be retained therein by a slip collar 12, which is slidably mounted on the part 4. The cover 8 may have provision on its inner side for the entry of memoranda data, and the outer sides of the enlargement 6 and cover 8 may have any suitable advertising matter` or other information provided thereon.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form ofthe parts, as it is 'capable of numerous modifications and changes Without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
l. The combination with a plurality of keys and an element loosely Carrying the same, of a designating member carried by said element and bearing a predetermined relation to the keys on the element, said member having its element carrying portion laterally odset from its longitudinal center.
2. The combination with a plurality of keys and an element loosely carrying the saine, of a designating member carrying said element and bearing a predetermined relation to the keys on the element,l said member comprising an elongated shank portion having at one end alateral projection in carrying engagement with the element and at its other end an enlargement on which memoranda pertainingto the keys may be noted.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my naine to this specification.
